The Pellett lab conducts research in the area of bacterial virulence and host-pathogen interactions, focusing on Clostridium botulinum and botulinum neurotoxin research. As such, the lab is Tier 1 Select Agent registered and all lab members must be willing and able to pass a Tier 1 Select Agent suitability assessment and follow all required regulations at all times in the lab. Research in the Pellett lab revolves around investigating pathogenic as well as pharmacological properties of botulinum neurotoxins and homologs, structure function studies, vaccine development, genetic manipulations of Clostridium botulinum, and gene expression studies in Clostridium botulinum.

The candidate for this position will be involved in multiple sponsored research projects that will include efforts in recombinant protein production and purification, countermeasures developments and analyses, as well as other aspects of basic research to increase our fundamental understanding of the pathogenesis and therapeutic utility of various botulinum neurotoxins. The candidate will have an important role in the lab, primarily performing supervised and independent research within the lab's current research program and will also participate in basic lab maintenance as needed. The candidate may have the opportunity to present data in written publications as well as at scientific conferences and to participate in preparing grant proposals to secure future funds.

This position requires the ability to obtain tetanus toxoid immunizations, must not be prohibited from working with select agents, and be willing to work with animals (mice injections) if required. This position also requires authorization of an FBI background check for restricted persons, an interview with UW Police Department Detective, yearly physical and psychological exams, and yearly drug screens.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Provides operational guidance on day-to-day activities of unit or program staff and/or student workers
  • Reviews, analyzes, and interprets data and/or documents results for presentations and/or reporting to internal and external audiences
  • Performs literature reviews and writes reports
  • Conducts research experiments according to established research protocols with moderate impact to the project(s). Collects data and monitors test results
  • Participates in the development, interpretation, and implementation of research methodology and materials
  • Operates, cleans, and maintains organization of research equipment and research area. Tracks inventory levels and places replenishment orders

Compensation:

The minimum salary for this position is $50,000. However, final salary will depend on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:
1) Significant lab experience in one or more of the following areas: biochemistry, toxicology, molecular biology, and/or microbiology
2) Strong record-keeping and data management skills to maintain standard operating procedures
3) Experience with protein purification and analysis
4) Experience with microbiology methods, particularly with anaerobes
5) A working understanding of regulations pertaining to Select Agent research

Preferred Qualifications:
1) Experience with large protein expression and purification (> 150 kDa) including chromatography
2) Experience with toxicity studies
3) Prior experience working in a Tier 1 Select Agent lab

Education:

Bachelor's Degree required

B.S. in bacteriology, medical microbiology, or related field
