Fitter


Purpose:



  • Valkyrie Enterprises is seeking an Elite Ship Fitter III to join our skilled team in Norfolk, Virginia. This position plays a critical role in precision fitting, fabrication, and shipboard structural work aboard U.S. Naval vessels. The ideal candidate will be a seasoned professional capable of interpreting complex blueprints, fabricating templates, and mentoring junior fitters in ship repair and new construction environments.



Job Description:


  • Perform advanced fitting and fabrication of steel and aluminum plate, structural shapes, and foundations on naval ships and associated equipment.
  • Read and interpret complex blueprints, schematics, and sketches to ensure accuracy and adherence to specifications.
  • Lay out, measure, and mark reference lines such as center, buttock, and frame lines.
  • Fabricate templates and jigs for bending, shaping, and bracing metal structures.
  • Set up and operate portable burning/heating torches and plasma cutters for fit-up and layout work.
  • Align, position, and secure structural parts and assemblies for final installation.
  • Ensure all work complies with relevant codes, standards, and shipyard procedures.
  • Work closely with welders, supervisors, and quality inspectors to coordinate production and ensure fit-up accuracy.
  • Mentor and guide junior fitters in proper layout techniques, drawing interpretation, and best practices.
  • Assist in documentation of fit-ups and quality control checks.
  • Perform Fire Watch duties when required.
  • Comply with all OSHA, shipyard safety, and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Travel to other shipyards or job sites as needed (up to 50%).


Qualifications:


  • Must have High school diploma or trade school certificate required.
  • Must have Minimum 10 years of related ship fitting experience in naval ship repair or construction.
  • Must be Proficient in interpreting shipboard blueprints, drawings, and reference lines in accordance with MIL-STD 22D.
  • Must be Experienced in aligning structural components within tight tolerances.
  • Must be Skilled in the use of precision measuring tools (levels, squares, calipers, plumb bobs, etc.).
  • Must have Demonstrated ability to lead and train junior mechanics and fitters.
  • Must meet NAVSEA and shipyard workmanship standards for fitting and structural alignment.


Desired Qualifications:


  • Ability to work in multiple climates and different weather conditions is preferred


Security Requirements:


  • Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Security Clearance to access public and private shipyards and Naval installations.
  • Must meet REAL ID requirements for base and travel access.


Travel Requirements:


  • Up to 50% travel nationwide to include international travel as needed.
  • If position requires travel by domestic flight or access to secure federal facilities/military bases, candidate must be able to obtain (by start of position) and maintain appropriate identification credentials, such as REAL ID. Physical Requirements:


  • Must be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 20 lbs
  • Must be physically agile to perform tasks in naval ships. Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces, including enter and moving through manholes.
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods
  • Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.
  • Frequent exposure to noise due to machinery and equipment.
  • Employee is required to operate trucks, forklifts & man-lifts
  • While performing the duties of this job, you may frequently be required to stand, walk & sit; use hands or fingers; handle or feel; talk and hear. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, squat, kneel, twist and crawl.
  • Work in extreme temperatures and conditions. At times you will work in areas that have less adequate ventilation
  • Frequent use of respirator.

Pay Range: $30 - $35 per hour
