Overview:
Martha's Vineyard Hospital (MVH), a member of Mass General Brigham (MGB), is a nonprofit health care organization serving the island of Martha's Vineyard. The mission of Martha's Vineyard Hospital is to safeguard the health of island residents and visitors by providing and arranging high-quality, accessible medical care. This care will be provided to all, regardless of ability to pay, in an atmosphere that fosters respect and compassion. MVH is a 25-bed critical access hospital offering more than 40 clinical services, as well as a robust perioperative department, a cancer center affiliated with Mass General Hospital, and an infusion center for dialysis treatment. As the island's largest employer, MVH maintains a year-round staff of approximately 750 full and part-time employees, expanding to nearly 900 employees during the busy summer season. MVH provides full-service, 24-hour emergency care along with a broad range of medical and surgical services, including primary care, pediatrics, OB/GYN, cardiology, general surgery, orthopedics, and psychiatry. Additional offerings include physical therapy, renal dialysis, a certified blood lab, and diagnostic imaging such as x-ray, mammography, CT scan, ultrasound, echocardiogram, and MRI. In recent years, the hospital has expanded to more than 40 clinical specialties, including dermatology, plastic surgery, neurology, and nephrology. Its affiliation with MGB ensures seamless access to advanced specialty care in Boston. Martha's Vineyard lies seven miles off the coast of Cape Cod, accessible only by ferry or air. The year-round population of 23,000 grows to more than 100,000 during the summer. Nearly one-third of residents are age 65 or older, which puts more demand on the hospital's services. The island is also home to a large Brazilian community and is the largest African American resort community in the country. The island's seasonal economy and high housing costs pose significant challenges to both the community and the hospital. More than 60% of homes are seasonally occupied, resulting in limited year-round rental availability. The median home price is $1.5 million, and one-bedroom rentals average $3,000 per month - placing housing out of reach for many workers. In response, MVH has invested more than $4 million in recent years to purchase and lease properties for staff. In 2025, the hospital successfully completed a $30 million capital campaign to build permanent workforce housing. The complex, which opened in September, includes 48 units and 76 bedrooms with rents scaled for occupant income. Role Summary: Martha's Vineyard Hospital is seeking an exceptional leader to serve as President and Chief Operating Officer (PCOO). The PCOO is responsible for the overall quality of care provided, for creating an inclusive and welcoming environment for staff, patients and visitors, and for working with other local leaders to address the broader community health challenges. The PCOO serves as the face of Martha's Vineyard Hospital to both internal and external communities. The PCOO exemplifies and promotes the strategy and values of Mass General Brigham (MGB) as an integrated healthcare system. Martha's Vineyard Hospital is financially and operationally sound. The previous leader and the management team have made great strides in improving the overall quality of care and access to specialty services that can be provided on Island. There is significant good will in the community and a track record of strong philanthropy. All of this bodes well but there are significant future challenges. The Federal funding environment is changing rapidly and is unpredictable. There continues to be a housing shortage on the Island and retaining and recruiting clinical staff will remain a priority. The Hospital also needs significant investment in its physical plant to expand its specialty offerings and accommodate a growing need for primary care services. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of health care on the Island and lead the effort to focus our delivery system on health and wellness as well as access to critical care and disease management. The ideal candidate will possess a robust operations background, a strong grasp of community-based care, and an innovative mindset. The PCOO is a leader of people and a developer of talent, dedicated to the career advancement of talented employees at all levels of the hospital. Reporting to the MGB Community Division President and SVP of Operations, the PCOO is the senior administrative leader of Martha's Vineyard Hospital, responsible for all aspects of inpatient and outpatient hospital operations, budgeting and operating performance, patient and community relations, capital planning, and all other responsibilities as assigned. The PCOO partners with the Martha's Vineyard Hospital Board of Trustees to deliver the highest quality, safest patient care, to build and manage strong community relationships, and to engage in philanthropic efforts in support of the Hospital's mission.
