ASCO is seeking a strategic and mission-driven Senior Director, Finance, (Conquer Cancer, the ASCO Foundation) to lead the accounting, budgeting, financial and management reporting, financial strategy, and investment oversight. In this role, the Senior Director will partner with leadership, engage with the Board, and ensure that financial operations support groundbreaking cancer research and programs worldwide.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure all accounting transactions are processed timely and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles to effectively mitigate risk.
  • Lead and facilitate the financial strategic planning of the Conquer Cancer Foundation (CCF) by evaluating its performance, anticipating financial risks and shortfalls, mitigating potential risks, and identifying solutions to ensure sustainability.
  • Ensure internal controls and segregation of duty for the recording of contributions and pledges in CCF's customer relationship management (CRM) tool.
  • Lead CCF's annual budget process to ensure realistic budget assumptions with the supporting detail and alignment with the strategic plan. Prepare detailed financial reports and analyses of CCF's results to monitor budget compliance.
  • Collaborate closely with CCF leadership and staff, and others across the organization, to develop financial processes that meet business needs, deliver critical financial analyses and strategies, and align key mandates including compliance with internal controls.
  • Partner with Finance leaders and others on the implementation of changes in policies, accounting guidance, improved internal controls, system implementations, and changes in ASCO business requirements. Lead and implement changes for CCF. Continuously look for opportunities to improve processes and implement operational efficiencies.
  • Develop thoughtful and effective presentations to share financial results with CCF leadership, Committees, and Boards to fulfill fiduciary duties. Deliver presentations and facilitate board discussions, as necessary.
  • Provide overall leadership and project management of the ASCO and CCF annual financial audit. Assure timely delivery of audit deliverables and provide review and consultation on the Form 990 preparation.
  • Recognize patterns in CCF expenses, including staffing and revenue, and recommend solutions to problem areas to ensure compliance with budget.
  • In collaboration with ASCO's CFO, monitor performance of investment portfolio and manager, strategize and analyze investment policy changes, and provide support for the Joint Investment Committee. Ensure investment strategy supports CCF's goals including strategic endowment efforts.
  • Assist with major procurement efforts and contracting and maintain general awareness of major contract terms.
  • Continuously monitor, evaluate, and coordinate with other Finance & Facilities staff changes in financial policies, accounting guidance, ASCO business requirements, and improved internal controls for the organizations including revenue recognition, gift and grant accounting, endowment accounting, and investment policy, etc.
  • Assure compliance with Conquer Cancer cost sharing agreement and support development of cost sharing methodology.
  • Develop a cadence and scorecard to evaluate the effectiveness and costs of CCF's treasury and credit card vendors.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to Finance & Facilities staff. Lead, manage, and develop CCF staff team members to ensure high engagement and results.
  • Other financial and leadership duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance or related field or equivalent years of experience
  • 10 - 12 years of related experience with demonstrated working knowledge GAAP (generally accepted accounting principles) and managing technical financial operations
  • 5+ years of supervisory experience
  • Certified Public Accountant - American Institute of Certified Public Accountants
  • Experience implementing and integrating financial systems
  • Experience interacting with Boards of Directors
  • Experience with federal grants, budget development, reporting, and management
  • Proficient in working with Microsoft Office tools or equivalent

Preferred Education and Experience

  • A graduate degree in public or business administration, finance, or accounting
  • Experience with an enterprise resource planning system (such as Workday, Oracle, PeopleSoft)
  • Experience in non-profits
