UMKC - School of Science and Engineering - Math Academy

Job Description

The expectation is for the Director to interface with the Kansas City Public High Schools surrounding UMKC to bring KCPHS students to UMKC facilities for the purpose of improving their mathematics skills; thereby increasing the mathematics literacy of and the ability for these students to attend a community college or 4-yr college/university. It is the intention to recruit a meaningful number of students in the initial, post-covid cohort with a major focus on recruitment of a diverse set of students, race, ethnicity, incomes, and gender and to continually grow this program over time.

The Director for the UMKC Math Academy will be expected to develop, coordinate, implement and manage the UMKC Math Academy. This will require the ability to create a high school equivalent, project-based mathematics curriculum that spans pre-college algebra to calculus, communicate (and negotiate) with high school administrators the plan for student recruitment, accreditation, instruction and transportation; hire, coordinate and evaluate program instructors and staff; interface with the UMKC Dual High School Program for UMKC enrollment and credit; evaluate the efficacy and impact of the program; provide timely reporting as to the program and all of its facets; and manage the budget for the program. The Director may also be included in the creation of government, foundation and donor proposals that could help fund, expand and sustain the UMKC Math Academy over time.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 5 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or Mathematic Education or related fields
  • 5 or more years of experience as a high school mathematics, science & engineering instructor
  • High School or program-based managerial and leadership experience
Anticipated Hiring Range

$69, 097 through $84,000 annually, commensurate on experience, education, and internal equity.
