Contract Part-Time CA Litigation Attorney (Remote)

Davis Wright Tremaine
$95.00 - $110.00 / hr
sick time, remote work
United States, California
Aug 28, 2025

Davis Wright Tremaine LLP is seeking a part-time litigation attorney for engagement through the firm's contract attorney and alternative staffing program, DWTSurge. This contract attorney position will work with the Firm's litigation practice group to manage and support a high-volume of third-party subpoena requests and litigation responses for several of DWT's institutional clients. While the role is remote, attorneys should be able to accommodate West Coast business hours. Attorneys barred in California are preferred.

Attorneys with prior experience at large litigation firms or in-house with technology corporations, significant experience in all phases of litigation, and who are seeking more flexibility in their practice, are encouraged to apply. In addition to flexibility, candidates can expect to work closely with DWT attorneys as part of a collaborative team, providing high-value legal services to DWT clients.

Attorneys should be highly organized with strong case management skills and will be required to regularly manage multiple matters with competing deadlines. Attorneys should be able to work independently and exercise good judgement, but should also collaborate easily with lawyers and support staff to meet discrete litigation objectives within short deadlines.

This contract position offers the flexibility of remote work and part-time hours, averaging 20-30 hours per week with a possibility of increasing to a weekly maximum of 40 hours as needed. While the engagement is for an initial 6-month contract term, we anticipate the work to remain relatively steady and there is a high possibility of renewal of the contract position for successful candidates. We are looking for attorneys interested in establishing a long-term working relationship with the Firm.

The Ideal Candidate will have:

  • 5+ years of litigation experience in a mid-sized or large law firm and/or with large institutional clients.
  • Bar admission in California is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience responding to and negotiating third-party subpoenas.
  • Scalable, high volume, experience with an emphasis on representing large technology corporations (including ecommerce, consumer-facing companies, and/or retail) preferred.
  • Strong negotiation skills and client-relationship building skills.
  • Excellent legal drafting and communication skills, including oral and written advocacy.
  • High-level of responsiveness and client service abilities. Confidence managing deadlines and effective communication with clients about deadlines.
  • Demonstrated success working on both high volume programmatic legal matters, and high-impact strategic complex litigation.
  • Availability to work an average of 25 hours per week, with the flexibility to increase hours as needed.
  • Ability to work remotely and primarily support West Coast hours.
  • Excellent writing skills, strong attention to detail, and ability to produce high quality work product with minimal supervision and direction.

Please note that this is a temporary contract position managed by DWT's flexible attorney and professional staff program, DWTSurge. Compensation will be paid on an hourly basis, commensurate with experience and skill level (see below). This role may be eligible for some benefits. Due to the structure of the DWTSurge program, DWTSurge employees are not eligible for the firm's pro bono, DEI, and other activities or opportunities outside of the above stated scope of work. We are interested in candidates electing to pursue a more flexible way of providing continuous, high-value legal services to the firm and our clients. If you are interested in a more traditional law firm position, please check the DWT careers page for lateral and staff opportunities.
