Overview

The Senior Substation Equipment Engineer performs assignments of basic and moderate complexity in engineering design, problem analysis, and planning. The Sr Engineer will perform and maintain ratings calculations for large substation equipment and ensures compliance with NERC reliability standards.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Responsible for performing ratings calculations for major substation electrical equipment (high voltage circuit breakers, power transformers and reactors, disconnect switches, bus etc).
  • Update current databases for Bulk Electric System equipment and area stations and ensuring compliance with NERC reliability standards. Act as the substation equipment SME during audits from federal entities FERC, NERC, NPCC.
  • Deliver real-time emergency ratings to support system reliability during contingency events.
  • Responsible for reviewing and approving NYISO notifications in a timely manner.
  • Interface with equipment manufacturers, industry standards and R&D organizations.
  • Collaborate with planning teams across S&TO and DE to ensure alignment on system strategies and initiatives.
  • As part of the Engineering Duty Roster, you will provide 24-hour support, including reviewing and approving test results and responding to emergent issues, for a week approximately 3-4 times annually.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and 8 years of engineering work experience in the development and application of technical principles in substation equipment rating, application, specification, engineering, operation, and maintenance, or
  • Master's Degree in Engineering and 6 years of engineering work experience in the development and application of technical principles in substation equipment rating, application, specification, engineering, operation, and maintenance.
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering and 6 years of engineering work experience in the development and application of technical principles in substation equipment rating, application, specification, engineering, operation, and maintenance.
Relevant Work Experience
  • Computer proficiency to include Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), required.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with personnel on all levels, required.
  • Knowledgeable in basic engineering design and principles, required.
  • Working knowledge of applicable codes and industry standards associated with the equipment, required.
  • Ability to write specifications and standards and coordinate engineering projects and assignments, preferred.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with a specialization in electrical or power systems and ratings calculations, preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License Required
  • Professional Engineer (PE) Preferred
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to work in and around substations that are under construction or in service.
  • The positions involve working around electrical equipment, working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, and ladder climbing.
  • Ability to travel within service territory and beyond as needed.
  • Must be available to work additional hours, as needed, for system emergencies or equipment outage schedules.
