OVERVIEW

Merrick & Company is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented college or graduate school Mechanical, Electrical, Architectural Engineering, or Building Sciences student for a paid summer internship for Summer 2026 at our Atlanta (Chamblee), GA office. The summer internship has a commitment of approximately mid-May through mid-August 2026.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

The Merrick Intern Program will provide an undergraduate or graduate student an opportunity to join our team in supporting the commissioning of high containment laboratory facilities, including BSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-3 enhanced environments. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain practical experience in the commissioning process for complex, critical infrastructure that supports public health, biodefense, and scientific research.

As a Commissioning Intern, you will assist in the planning, execution, and documentation of commissioning activities for building systems such as HVAC, building automation, laboratory controls, plumbing, and emergency power systems. You will work closely with experienced commissioning professionals and project teams, including architects, engineers, contractors, and facility stakeholders.

The position requires collaboration with other disciplines, ability to interface with clients and contractors, follow schedules and budget commitments, work independently, possess good written and oral communication skills and the ability to problem solve. Must meet expectations for attendance and punctuality. Students who have recently graduated will not be considered.

As a Commissioning Intern, you will gain exposure to the full commissioning lifecycle of complex, high-stakes laboratory environments. You'll develop hands-on experience with building systems and controls that are essential for maintaining biosafety and containment. Throughout the internship, you will benefit from direct mentorship by experienced commissioning professionals with deep expertise in life sciences and critical facilities. You'll also build an understanding of key industry standards such as ASHRAE Guideline 0, and the CDC/NIH Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL). This experience will provide a strong foundation for future career paths in building commissioning, MEP engineering, and facility operations.


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have graduation date after August 2026 to be eligible.
  • Must be pursuing an engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Architectural Engineering from an A.B.E.T. accredited program.
  • Must be currently enrolled and entering junior year or higher of undergraduate degree or currently enrolled in grad school.
  • Must have a valid driver's license, a good driving record, and be insurable under Merrick's insurance carrier.
  • Must be willing and able to travel approximately 50% of the time.
  • The client projects for this position require U.S. Citizenship.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Interest in building systems, sustainability, and life sciences facilities.
  • Willingness to work on active construction sites under proper supervision and training.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; familiarity with AutoCAD, Revit, or commissioning software.
  • Knowledge of Bluebeam REVU/Adobe Acrobat.
  • Local candidates preferred.
