This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.
As part of a small, hardworking, passionate and accomplished team of experts, you will own engineering support of high rate builds of New Glenn's composite payload fairing and fixed adapter including engineering redesign, rapid resolution of manufacturing non conformances, and design improvements for cost, rate, and quality. - Design, analysis, development, testing, and qualification of primary and secondary composite structures.
- Work with cross-functional teams that are responsible for selecting materials, manufacturing processes, and suppliers to produce world class aerospace hardware.
- Create 3D models, detail part drawings, assemblies, installations, and interface control documents.
- Create test plans, specifications, and other documentation for the development of flight hardware
- Provide technical guidance for integration, manufacturing, and production support.
- Primary design engineering contact for manufacturing and production support issues for composite structures and related hardware currently in production at Blue Origin and suppliers.
- Own disposition of recurring and one-off non conformances by working with stress, M&P, M.E., and adjacent hardware responsible engineers to approve repair/rework/UAI/scrap dispositions for discrepant hardware.
- Identify and implement engineering corrective actions to reduce future non conformances.
- Work with production teams to identify and implement opportunities for cost and rate improvements through design updates.
- Participate in the development, review, and procurement of new equipment and tooling.
- Coach, mentor and technically assist other engineers.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Minimum of a B.S. degree in engineering and 10 years of experience with aircraft, spacecraft, or launch vehicle structures.
- Experience with nonconforming hardware repair methods and disposition (Liaison, MR/MRB, etc).
- Experience with aerospace composite and metallic structural design, manufacturing, and analysis.
- Experience with production aircraft or launch vehicles in one or more of the following areas:
- Vehicle load path distribution, and first order strength assessment and sizing
- Composite skin-stringer or sandwich panel design
- Material selection, compatibility and manufacturing techniques
- Primary Structure Composite Repairs
- Strong understanding of composite and metallic design and analysis matters
- Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance analysis (ASME Y14.5).
- Familiarity with ASME Y14.100 and Y14.41.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with complex composite repair development and/or analysis.
- Experience supporting AOG (Aircraft on Ground) operations.
- Ability to apply structural mechanics principles and development designs using hand calculations and finite element analysis.
- Demonstrated expertise with any industry standard analysis codes: Ansys, Nastran, Optistruct, LS/Dyna, Hypermesh, Hypersizer.
- Experience with Creo (Pro/E) Wildfire 5 or greater, Windchill 10.
- Mechanical design and integration skills using CATIA V5 and the CATIA composite software workbenches.
- Experienced with fabrication of composite primary structures for aerospace.
- Experience with fabrication utilizing automated fiber placement (AFP) and tape laying (ATL).
- Experience or expertise with fabrication of large-scale out-of-autoclave (OoA) composite structures.
- Knowledge of systems engineering practices, fabrication and integration processes, and quality control.
- Experience with Optimization and DOE methods as applied to design, analysis, and testing.
- Experience working in a cross-functional team responsible for selecting materials, manufacturing processes, and developing the design to produce world-class engineered products.
Compensation Range for: WA applicants is $140,959.00-$197,342.25
