THE POSITION

Join the Department of Conservation & Natural Resources (DCNR) as a Management Forester and play a key role in helping to ensure our natural landscapes continue to flourish and prosper. This is an exceptional opportunity to oversee the planning and implementation of silvicultural activities and state forest management within the Braddock Division of the Forbes Forest District. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Management Forester, your primary focus will be centered around the planning, development, and implementation of programs designed to manage, protect, and conserve forest resources. You will participate in specialized projects involving the compilation of data such as timber type, forest health, forest vitality, timber measurement, regeneration, wildlife habitat and conditions, recreational use, insect and disease activities, and other pertinent factors. Data will be further analyzed and interpreted in order to determine the treatment to be prescribed for the landscape or stand. You will also prepare and administer the implementation of regeneration fund projects for assigned areas of state forest lands which may include deer fences, tree plantings, herbicide applications, prescribed burns, mowing, and more.


This professional also serves as a State Forest Officer and enforces all state forest rules and regulations throughout the district. The ability to work under pressure is essential, as you will assist with fire prevention activities, in addition to functioning as a Forest Fire Warden who will take action to extinguish and investigate wildland fires when necessary. Duties will also entail serving as forest fire dispatcher and assisting with the development and execution of prescribed fire plans.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Week 1 and 3 work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Week 2 and 4 work hours are 7:00 AM to 4:15 PM, Monday - Thursday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Overtime may be required during the fire season.
  • Travel may be required for mandatory trainings.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 1 day per month as needed. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Farmington. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of technical forestry experience, and an associate's degree in forest technology, forestry, forest management, forest ecosystem management, urban forestry, forest science, agroforestry, or a related forestry degree; or
  • A bachelor's degree in forest technology, forestry, forest management, forest ecosystem management, urban forestry, forest science, agroforestry, or a related forestry degree; or
  • A master's degree in forest technology, forestry, forest management, forest ecosystem management, urban forestry, forest science, agroforestry, or a related forestry degree.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of a valid PA non-commercial Class C driver's license or equivalent.

Other Requirements:

  • PA residency requirement is currently waived for this title.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
