Physics
Reports To:
Professor
Position Type:
Staff
Position Summary:
This position is open for a Ph.D. in Applied
Physics or related field for an experimental project funded by DOE and Keck
Foundation for the next 3 years. The candidate is expected to live close
to Brookhaven National Lab, NY.
Essential Functions:
Information about the Project
-Project
Location: MET beamline at NSLS-II, Brookhaven National Lab.
-Description
of the instrument being used: Mueller matrix magneto-ellipsometer and
transmission/reflection polarimeter for quantum materials.
-We are using a PI-designed and developed setup for Mueller
matrix spectroscopic ellipsometry and transmission/reflection (T/R) polarimetry
in high magnetic fields (up to 7 T) with sample cryogenic temperatures down to
4 K at the most advanced synchrotron source, NSLS-II, Brookhaven National
Laboratory (BNL).
-There is a capability to convert synchrotron radiation to the
circularly polarized beams or vortex beams with the Orbital Angular Momentum
(OAM) for studies of the circular and/or vortex dichroism in magnetic
materials.
-We already have fully automatic data collection and LabView-based
control of the instrument and advanced Matlab-based software for data modelling
and analysis. -We carry out our own experiments and we also collaborate with the
external Users of this experimental setup.
Prerequisite Qualifications:
-Magnetic fields, cryo-temperatures, high vacuum, FT-IR or THz spectroscopy, polarimetry or ellipsometry.
-Interest in quantum and magnetic materials.
-Knowledge of Matlab and/or Python for data analysis.
-Some experience with one of the following is a plus: Raman spectroscopy, x-ray or neutron diffraction, synchrotron radiation, 3D CAD, and ZEMAX.
-At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
