Hourly Rate: $22.44

Position Summary:

Under supervision of the Principal Investigator and senior research personnel, the Lab Assistant in the Dept of Medical Genetics and Molecular Biochemistry provides general laboratory operations support. After initial training, this will include performing experiments and collecting data, as well as general laboratory maintenance. Our laboratory performs no experiments using vertebrate animals, only cells maintained in culture conditions.

Required Education and Experience:

* Bachelor's degree with coursework in biology or chemistry. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills and Abilities:

* Ability to keep accurate experimental and inventory records

* Ability to use standard software including MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint.

* Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to follow explicit instructions.

* Excellent interpersonal skills, along with the ability to interact with a diverse population of students, faculty and staff.

Preferred Skills and Abilities:

* Experience with molecular graphics software is preferred.

Essential duties:

* Preparing standard solutions and reagents

* Performing bacterial culture assays

* Assisting with protein purification procedures

* Performing computer-based analysis of protein structures

* Summarizing and presenting experimental results at weekly lab meetings

* Maintaining inventory of laboratory equipment and supplies.

* After training, duties may include performing protein purification procedures independently.

* Performs other duties as assigned
