General Notes

The College of Fine Arts is the college of creativity at The University of Texas at Austin-a home for artists, performers, designers, scholars, educators, makers and creatives ready to change the world. Longhorn Band is a part of the Sarah and Ernest Butler School of Music within the College of Fine Arts.

Purpose

To coordinate all aspects of Longhorn Band Color Guard, including program coordination, program design, choreography, and clinics.

Responsibilities
  • Member Recruitment: Advertise, recruit for, and adjudicate Longhorn Band color guard member selection to increase membership and ensure talent development.

  • Clinic Design: Design and lead summer color guard clinics to teach techniques, formations, and orientate members.

  • Choreography: Design and teach color guard choreography in traditional college football styles as well as contemporary drum corps styles. Enhancement of the audio through a dynamic range of efforts: space, time, weight, and flow. Imaginative and inventive use of a variety of design choices

  • Event Travel and Attendance: Attend all Longhorn Band rehearsals and performances, including for post-season bowl and FBS playoff travel.

  • Program Coordination: Plan and develop programmatic strategies for color guard needs to enhance brand and prestige. Support lecturers and design performances for end of semester showcase.

Required Qualifications
  • High School diploma

  • Taught color guard or dance/drill formation for at least five years in high school or for an area group.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Drum Corps International and Winter Guard International Experience

  • Five years of Color Guard coaching

  • Dance background

  • Flag (rifle) background

  • Drum Corp experience

  • Read sheet music

Salary Range

$45,000 (prorated)

Working Conditions
  • Prolonged screen time

  • Repetitive use of a keyboard at a workstation

  • Use of manual dexterity.

  • Long periods of walking

  • Spinning (flags, rifles, performance props)

  • Exposure to all weather elements

Work Shift
  • Regular Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm. On campus required. Includes nights and weekends during band events, as needed.

  • Fixed term position for AY 2025-26 expected End Date 07/31/2026.
