Overview
Serves as a liaison between the company and agents and acts as an interim relationship manager for our agents, regional underwriting team and corporate departments, focusing primarily on underwriting new middle market business. Serves as a backup for open territories as needed for both AMS and Small Business Underwriters. Supports agents and assists them in achieving a mutual goal of profitable growth in both volume and policy count. Ensures that agents are familiar with and use Selective's initiatives, products, policies, procedures and services. Position is primarily office based with primary contact via phone and email. May travel occasionally to meet with key agency partners. All job duties and responsibilities must be carried out in compliance with applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
Responsibilities
- Works with agents to write new profitable business and achieve agency goals. Ensures continuity when vacancies occur and ensures a high level of satisfaction and agency support. Assist busy AMS with overflow.
- May market and underwrite small business according to acceptable underwriting criteria, proper classification, and adherence to company underwriting standards and philosophy.
- Makes consistent underwriting decisions, adheres to company pricing philosophies and promotes ease of doing business with Selective. Provides excellent communication and service via digital technology.
- Monitors agency results and follows up with agents on new business opportunities, growth/profitability/share of wallet and compliance with company's initiatives, procedures, and policies.
- Develop professional working relationship with agent, regional underwriting, claim teams, and corporate departments.
- Keeps two-way communication between agent and company continuously open and viable and encourages agent usage of all Selective systems, including CLAS, PLUS and e-Select.
- Keeps abreast of industry developments, new ideas, products, or changes in other carrier philosophies that could positively or adversely affect Selective.
- May be responsible for limited automobile travel to assigned agents. Car travel may represent 5% of employees' time.
Qualifications
Knowledge and Requirements
- Strong marketing skills.
- Entrepreneurial and hands-on approach.
- Demonstrated strong communication, negotiation & presentation skills.
- Must be a high achiever with superior organizational skills who is self-motivated, pro-active, flexible, and able to work independently.
- Must be able to maximize technology to ensure high productivity (must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and all internal business related software).
- Strong focus on results.
- Must have valid state-issued driver's license in good standing and be able to drive an automobile.
Education and Experience
- College degree preferred with 2+ years of underwriting, marketing or field underwriting experience.

The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.
Pay Range
USD $63,000.00 - USD $87,000.00 /Yr.
