Energy Innovation Program Consultant | Data Center Strategy



Do you thrive at the intersection of energy strategy, customer innovation, and emerging technology? We're seeking an Energy Innovation Consultant to help shape APS's long-term strategy for serving data centers and other high-load growth customers. This is a forward-thinking role designed to protect reliability and affordability for existing customers while supporting the energy demands of Arizona's rapidly evolving tech and industrial sectors.



As a key player on the Energy Innovation team, you'll use your utility acumen to drive strategic policy, lead stakeholder alignment, and serve as a trusted partner to high-demand customers-from contract negotiation through solution implementation. Your work will shape APS's approach to grid innovation, cost recovery, and future-facing programs that integrateenergy efficiency, demand response, microgrids, and on-site generation.



What Your Day Would Look Like:



  • Lead customer-facing strategy efforts for data centers and other high-load growth sectors, including relationship management and contract development.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with APS business units (e.g., Key Accounts, Customer Construction, Regulatory, and Legal) to ensure customer needs align with company policy and grid capabilities.
  • Track national utility trends and policies impacting the data center industry, and apply insights to shape APS tariff development and strategic positioning.
  • Design and evaluate innovative programs that leverage new technologies-such as energy storage, on-site generation, and demand flexibility-to benefit both large customers and the grid.
  • Monitor the performance of strategic customer portfolios, resolve challenges proactively, and present findings and recommendations to internal stakeholders.
  • Serve as a thought partner on long-term planning and business development opportunities that align with APS's clean energy and reliability goals.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors' degree in Engineering, Science, Information Technology or related field
  • AND eight (8) years of prior relevant experience in the power and natural gas sectors with an understanding of regulatory, technical and business issues impacting the industry including renewables, distributed energy and grid technologies.
  • In lieu of Bachelor's degree, High School/GED PLUS twelve (12) years directly related experience in the power and natural gas sectors with an understanding of regulatory, technical and business issues impacting the industry including renewables, distributed energy and grid technologies.
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of one or more emerging energy technologies and related business models, such as solar, energy storage, electric vehicles, energy management software platforms etc.

Major Accountabilities

1) Manage standard Energy Innovation related projects, both directly and through collaboration with other internal and external groups through effective research, data and trend analysis.
2) Research and understand relevant technology trends and emerging business models, including early stage developments.
3) Prepare regular business updates on industry trends, emerging technologies and technology-enabled business models, focusing on the potential opportunities and threats for the Company.
4) Develop analytical and technical capabilities and expertise in areas including: distributed generation, energy storage and smart grid technologies, regulatory and policy issues.
5) Work closely with other business unit teams to assess technology-driven business opportunities, and build business cases for handling of the most impactful technologies
6) Provide support and expertise in forecasting the business impacts of emerging technologies, and ensure these perspectives are factored into business case development.
7) Effectively interface and resolve project issues with departmental staff, other departments, regulatory agencies and other stakeholders to meet project requirements.
8) Maintain and foster business relationships with business units and vendors, participating in negotiations and evaluations to identify potential issues and risks.
9) Participate, as Company representative in various forums, committees and working groups dealing with various Energy Innovation technical, policy and regulatory issues.
10) Demonstrates a continuous learning mindset and knowledge of pilot and proof of concept goals and processes. Able to contribute to the construction of a POC plan and test platform.

Hybrid:Employees in hybrid roles work both in their home offices (virtually) and alongside their colleagues (in person).

In order for employees to build strong relationships and to promote meaningful in-person interactions, hybrid employees are expected to work about 40% of their time in-person at an APS or other (non-home office) location.

*Employees are expected to reside in Arizona (or New Mexico for Four Corners-based employees).

*Working from a home office requires adequate technology and an appropriate ergonomic set up.
