JOB TITLE:

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, UNIVERSITY DISABILITY SUPPORT SERVICES

JOB PURPOSE:

Assist the Director of the Disability Support Services Office with the overall management, personnel, and operational functions; responsible for directing the daily operations of the DSS Office in the Director's absence; provide professional assessment including interpreting medical documentation, one-on-one meetings with students, and services provided to campus community, as well as outreach and educational workshops.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assist with or act on behalf of the Director, Disability Support Services (DSS), which includes directing the daily operations of the DSS Center, its services, staffing, and recording keeping, and assisting in personnel, budget, and policy issues as needed, in accordance with the University of Wyoming policies and procedures affecting DSS.
  • Use high level judgment and discretion in the application of federal regulations and case law, working collaboratively to develop individualized support plans that address the unique needs of each student while promoting academic success.
  • Instruct, train, and aid in the supervising of staff hiring and performance of team members. Manage the provision of accommodations services (e.g. interpreters, note-takers, alternative material formats, test accommodations, etc.) for a caseload of students and supervisees.
  • Provide advocacy for UW community members with disabilities with faculty, staff, and administration.
  • Provide leadership and liaison with Student Health, University Counseling Center, Dean of Students, Campus Recreation, and Student Success & Graduation. Interpret university policies and procedures and advise students, parents, faculty, and administrators on curriculum substitutions, course and test administration policies, class material adaptation and other accommodation strategies.
  • Provide leadership and assistance in the development of maintaining high-level judgment and discretion in the application of federal regulations and case law to determine appropriate accommodations on a case-by-case basis. Prepare reports and documentation as needed (monthly, by semester, annually). Maintain accurate and confidential records of student accommodations, services provided and outcomes achieved. Utilize data to inform decision-making and program improvements.
  • Manage and lead program goals by providing professional and technical expertise on disability issues (particularly in assistive technology and computer access areas) throughout the campus community (e.g. provide training for faculty and staff on adaptive computing technologies, conduct workshops and presentations on disability issues such as laws, the application of the laws at UW, website accessibility, accessibility training courses for use with learning management systems, etc.).
  • Represent DSS on division and university-wide committees.
  • Lead and supervise the coordinator of testing accommodations for students.
  • Provide technology support, recommend software upgrades, troubleshooting and monitoring databases for changes, and convey updates to the team.
  • Provide leadership and assistance with monitoring program effectiveness and identify areas for improvement. Implement strategies to enhance the quality and accessibility of disability support services.

REMOTE WORK ELIGIBILITY:

This position provides vital support to campus customers and requires the successful candidate be available to work on campus.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Master's degree in Special Education, Rehabilitation Counseling, Higher Education Administration or a related field

Experience: 3 years work-related experience, preferably in higher education setting

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Prefer Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) or Certified Disability Services Provider (CDSP)
  • Experience working with and advocating for diverse populations, including neurodiverse students and students with learning disabilities, and chronic medical conditions.
  • Knowledge of disability laws (ADA, Section 504), trends in higher education, and familiarity with accommodations, IEPs and 504 plans.
