Mercer Engineering Research Center (MERC), a research institute of Mercer University, provides high quality engineering, scientific, and technical support services to both government and private industry customers.

The Fabrication Technician is responsible for designing and collaborating on detailed engineering efforts, maintaining technical interface with customers, diagnosing needs and opportunities, and preparing engineering architectures and design fabrication.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ability to read and interpret technical data packages.

  • Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc.
    welding equipment.

  • Monitor the fitting, burning, and welding processes to avoid overheating of parts or warping, shrinking, distortion, or expansion of material.

  • Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly to ensure that the end product meets the technical data package requirements.

  • Knowledge of relative safety standards and willingness to use protective equipment

  • Ability to perform tasks without difficulty and attention to detail.

  • Measuring and cutting materials to specifications.

  • Check finished work to verify that it falls within tolerances marked on the prints.

  • Maintain equipment in a condition that does not compromise safety.

  • Maintain a clean, organized work area.

  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

    REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    - U.S. Citizenship

    - Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Security Clearance.

    - Welding experience and AWS certification or have the ability to gain AWS certification.

    - High school diploma or GED and 10 years of directly related experience.

    - Must be able to work in a standing position for long period of time.

    - Certified forklift operator is preferred.

    - Will comply with all quality and safety standards and rules.

    - Complete work on time and under budget.

    -Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and proficiency at reading precision measuring instruments,
    such as micrometers, calipers, and dial indicators.

    - Must be able to problem-solve and work with engineering to determine fabrication options and plans.

    - Able to multi-task and work multiple requirements as needed.

    - Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications using precision measuring instruments.

    - Must be able to maintain tolerance and finishes to engineering and manufacturing specifications.

    Final rank will be determined on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
