Job Summary

The Director of Internal & Executive Communications independently oversees a comprehensive communications program for UCSF Health, a nationally recognized, more than $5 billion health system. This role develops and manages internal communication strategies to advance organizational priorities, enable transparency, foster a strong culture, and ensure alignment across the health system.

Key Responsibilities

  • Internal Communication Strategy & Execution: Develops and oversees systemwide communication strategies to support business needs, engage employees, and connect audiences with UCSF Health's strategic priorities. Produces communication plans, news stories, newsletters, and digital media strategies to inform and engage internal stakeholders.
  • Executive Communication & Leadership Support: Advises senior leaders on internal messaging strategy and communication priorities. Develops clear, consistent executive communications that align with UCSF Health's goals and strengthen connection with employees and stakeholders.
  • Operational Communication & Stakeholder Engagement: Partners with the Senior Executive Team (SET), business unit leaders, and site teams to address operational communication needs. Supports the Chief Medical Officer, Chief Clinical Officer, and hospital presidents in translating key messages for internal audiences, including physicians.
  • Enterprise-Wide Communication Programs: Leads and executes key initiatives, including town halls, management meetings, and internal campaigns, ensuring leadership messages are effectively delivered. Develops and coordinates internal communication campaigns that reinforce business needs and strategic goals.
  • Strategic Alignment & Brand Consistency: Collaborates with the UCSF Health branding and marketing teams to ensure communication programs align with system-wide strategic business goals and brand directives. Maintains strong relationships across the health system and campus to drive cohesive messaging.
  • Project & Program Oversight: Manages a comprehensive communications program with diverse media formats, including written, visual, digital, and electronic platforms. Provides guidance to team members, reviews recommendations for functional programs, and ensures timely execution of communication strategies.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors, including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. The annual salary range for this position is $110,400-$235,400, with a min. target entry point of $146,600+ depending on experience. Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in a related area or four years of equivalent experience/training.
  • Seven years or more of related experience in a leadership capacity (lead, supervisor or manager).
  • Deep understanding of all aspects of communications, including strategic planning, content development, and the effective use of various media formats. Proven ability to tailor messaging and channels for different audiences, ensuring clarity, engagement, and impact.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop high-performing teams, including selecting, training, evaluating, and motivating staff to deliver high-quality communications. Experience providing clear direction, coaching, and corrective action when needed.
  • Ability to develop and implement comprehensive long- and short-term strategic communication plans aligned with organizational goals. Experience advising senior leaders on communication strategies.
  • Awareness of industry trends, regulatory considerations, and specialized subject matter relevant to academic medical centers to include knowledge of healthcare, higher education, and public affairs issues.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling messages, navigate complex organizational dynamics, and engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong ability to assess organizational and external landscapes, anticipate challenges, and develop communication approaches that support change management, employee engagement, and leadership alignment.
  • Strong critical thinking, project management, and decision-making skills, with the ability to identify challenges, develop solutions, and drive communications initiatives that support organizational priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality work under tight deadlines and within budget constraints while managing competing priorities in a fast-paced, high-profile environment.
  • Extensive experience in executive and internal communication.
  • Strong writing, editing, and storytelling skills, with experience developing strategic messaging for senior leaders.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement communication plans that drive engagement and alignment across diverse audiences.
  • Expertise in managing high-profile internal events, such as town halls and leadership meetings.
  • Exceptional project management skills and the ability to execute communication strategies in a dynamic environment.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism, which are foundational values central to UCSF's mission.
  • The ability to work onsite in our San Francisco office for a min. of three days a week or more.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Deep understanding of UCSF Health's mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure.
  • Strong knowledge of communication technologies, digital platforms, and design principles to effectively manage professional staff and oversee content creation across multiple mediums, including written, visual, and electronic formats.
  • Exp. working in a large health system or complex organization.
