Data Solutions Manager

SUMMARY

Mortenson Construction is seeking a strategic and technically adept Data Solutions Manager to lead our Data Engineering, Data Architecture, Business Intelligence, and Data Operations functions. This role plays a critical part in shaping and executing Mortenson's enterprise data strategy and reports directly to the Director of AI. The successful candidate will combine deep technical expertise with a product ownership mindset to deliver robust, scalable, and business-driven data capabilities.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Leadership & Product Ownership



  • Serve as the primary liaison between business partners and the data team, translating business objectives into data capabilities and roadmaps.
  • Develop and maintain data product roadmaps and implementation plans aligned with enterprise priorities.
  • Foster a product-oriented culture focused on business value delivery, continuous improvement, and end-user empowerment.


Data Engineering & Architecture



  • Oversee a team leveraging Informatica Cloud to ingest and transform data into Mortenson's on-prem Oracle Enterprise Data Warehouse.
  • Collaborate with Data Architecture leads to ensure integrity, performance, and scalability of the enterprise data warehouse.
  • Balance the ongoing maintenance of the legacy data environment with modernization efforts.


Business Intelligence



  • Manage a decentralized BI model by providing governance, tools, and standards while leading the central BI oversight team.
  • Enable self-service reporting and dashboarding across business units with strong data stewardship principles.


Data Operations



  • Build out the Data Operations function from the ground up, including monitoring, data quality, observability, and issue resolution capabilities.
  • Define operational SLAs and establish practices for proactive system management and support.


Future-State Architecture



  • Lead the implementation of a data mesh architecture leveraging the Microsoft Fabric technology stack.
  • Empower business units to manage and utilize their own data domains for Reporting, Analytics, and AI use cases.
  • Drive adoption of modern data practices that support federated governance, discoverability, and interoperability.


QUALIFICATIONS

Required:



  • 7+ years of experience in data engineering, BI, or data architecture roles, with at least 3 years in a leadership capacity.
  • Strong experience with ETL tools (Informatica preferred) and enterprise data warehouses (Oracle or similar).
  • Demonstrated success in leading cross-functional teams and managing complex data programs.
  • Proven ability to manage legacy platforms while transitioning to modern cloud and decentralized architectures.
  • Expertise in stakeholder management, roadmap development, and agile delivery practices.


Preferred:



  • Experience implementing data mesh or similar decentralized data architectures.
  • Hands-on exposure to Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse, Power BI, or related technologies.
  • Construction, engineering, or industrial operations industry knowledge.

The base pay range for this role is $126,500 - $189,800. (Actual range is higher for the following office locations: Denver, CO and Chicago, IL - 5%, Seattle, WA, and Portland, OR - 10%, Washington, D.C. - 12.5%).

Base pay is positioned within the range based on several factors including an individual's knowledge, skills, and experience, with consideration given to internal equity.
