Job Summary

The Investigational Drugs Service Specialist Pharmacist serves as a subject matter expert and leader in the specialized area of investigational drug services. In collaboration with multidisciplinary teams and pharmacy leadership, the Specialist Pharmacist supports and advances departmental strategies, optimizes clinical and operational outcomes, contributes to achieving financial goals, and promotes operational excellence.

This role acts as a primary liaison with external stakeholders, including clinical trial sponsors and regulatory bodies, to ensure compliance and alignment with departmental and institutional goals. The Specialist Pharmacist coordinates and leads pharmacy team involvement in various internal and external committees, taskforces, and working groups-including, but not limited to, UC Office of the President (UCOP) initiatives and Pharmacy & Therapeutics (P&T) Committee responsibilities.

In addition to their clinical and operational duties, the Specialist Pharmacist plays a key role in the education and mentorship of pharmacy residents and students, facilitating experiential learning and training in investigational drug services. The role also includes leading or contributing to research initiatives, clinical trials, and medication evaluations to support evidence-based practices and advance departmental priorities.

Through the integration of clinical expertise, leadership, education, systems-based practice, and project management, the Investigational Drugs Service Specialist Pharmacist is accountable for promoting safe, effective, and high-quality care for patients receiving investigational therapies.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload a license and/or certification if required for the position

  • California Board of Pharmacy License eligible and must possess a valid license at the time of hire
  • Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm D) from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education certified school of pharmacy, or equivalent training
  • Ten (10) years of relevant work experience in Investigational Drugs Services
  • Experience in quality improvement, project management, and/or professional service
  • Ability to foster a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Ability to collaborate and work well in a multi-disciplinary team environment, including the ability to manage projects and deadlines, and to set and meet goals and priorities for self and others with minimal supervision
  • Problem-solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem, identify the resources available to help solve the problem, create and implement viable solutions, and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved to the satisfaction of all parties
  • Decision-making skills to independently exercise delegated authority to act, and to recognize when it is appropriate to seek assistance from others when the limits of delegated authority have been reached
  • Ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained, and a professional, respectful clinic/department environment exists at all times
  • Working knowledge of federal and state/local regulations around medication handling requirements and controlled substance accountability
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, and a sound work ethic
  • Excellent organizational, prioritization, and time-management skills
  • Ability to maintain composure, efficiency, and a positive, customer-service oriented manner during periods of peak workload, with frequent interruptions, under tight deadlines
  • Ability to coach and mentor pharmacy residents, students, and staff

Preferred Qualifications

  • Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist (BCOP) or Board Certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist (BCPS)
  • Completion of Post Graduate Year Two (PGY 2) Investigational Drugs Services Residency or PGY 2 Oncology Residency

The Department of Pharmacy is a dynamic, integral, and critical part of patient care provided by UC Davis Health. As a department of greater than 600 professional, technical, and administrative support personnel, we focus on providing patient-centered medication management that optimizes outcomes through practice, education, research, and leadership through the continuum of care. We also have the largest pharmacy residency program in the country, with 46 total residents in 13 different programs.

The Department of Pharmacy offers comprehensive pharmaceutical services (unit dose, IV admixtures, clinical services, infusion pumps, and teaching) throughout the health system complex 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The pharmacy services encompass inpatient pharmacy services as well as an expansive footprint in the ambulatory care space, where we have clinical pharmacists embedded within our clinics and specialty care locations. Our operational teams support the health system enterprise with three inpatient pharmacies, five outpatient pharmacies, two infusion pharmacies, a home infusion service line, and the full complement of pharmacy purchasing, stores, and distribution.

Work Environment
