Adult Psychiatrists With over 700 employees, Behavioral Health Services (BHS) at Denver Health is a large and rapidly expanding department that provides psychiatric care for patients in community, emergency, inpatient, justice, medical, mobile, and outpatient settings. The Psychiatrist, Psychiatric Emergency Services (PES) provides emergency psychiatric care primarily in Psychiatric Emergency Services. Provides rapid assessment, triage, stabilization, and referral for patients in psychiatric crisis complicated by complexities such as homelessness, poverty, medical issues, and other determinants of psychiatric health and wellbeing. Also manages complications of acute substance intoxication and withdrawal. Coordinates care with multiple community partners, consults with colleagues in the co-located medical emergency department, works well with a multi-disciplinary team, and is available to work some weekends, holiday, and overnight shifts.

Essential Functions:
  • Provide emergency psychiatric assessment and interventions for patients in psychiatric crisis. Skills needed includes triage, rapid assessment, de-escalation, stabilization, and referral of patients of all ages who present with acute mania, psychosis, agitation, suicidal behaviors, and other psychiatric emergencies. This work may include rapid stabilization of aggressive patients. Shifts take place during the day, night, weekday, weekend, and holiday hours. The job includes collaborating with medical colleagues in the emergency department and inpatient units as well as with key community collaborators such as the police, paramedics, homeless shelters, and other psychiatric providers. In addition, PES physicians provide after-hours coverage for the methadone program, the inpatient psychiatric units, night float residents, Denver City and County Jails, and Denver CARES. They also initiate opioid replacement therapy as needed. (70%)
  • Supervise trainees and advanced practice providers as assigned (10%)
  • Generate accurate and appropriate documentation of services in the medical record and write reports in a timely fashion (10%)
  • Design and/or support academic efforts in scholarship, quality improvement, and professional writing (10%)

Education:
  • Doctorate Degree Graduate of an accredited medical school Required

Work Experience:

    Licenses:
    • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required and
    • MD-Physician - State Medical Board Required and
    • Psychiatry - ABPN- American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology Required

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    • Knowledge of and ability to apply professional medical principles, procedures and techniques
    • Thorough knowledge of pharmacological agents and behavioral interventions used in patient treatment
    • Able to effectively manage and direct medical staff support activities while providing quality medical care
    • Able to receive detailed information and express and exchange ideas by verbal and written communication
    • Excellent written and verbal communications, listening, and social skills including in public speaking and teaching
    • Strong task management skills
    • Able to interact effectively with people of varied educational, socioeconomic and ethnic/racial backgrounds, skill levels, and value systems
    • Performs in a tactful and professional manner under stressful and emotionally charged circumstances
    • A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected
    • Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals
