Overview

The Instructor/Program Director for the Health Information Technology (HIT) program is responsible for the organization, administration, continuous review, planning, development, and general effectiveness of the HIT Program.

This is a full-time position where 5.5 of the 22 instructional workload hours are devoted to Program Director responsibilities. Should these workload hours not be appropriate, the HIT Program Director and Dean will collaborate to determine that sufficient release time meets the needs of the HIT program. This position will be primarily remote/online. However, in-person meetings, recruitment activities and accreditation related work may require travel to campus approximately 1-2 times per semester.

Northwood Tech Instructors teach in a discipline area in which they have specific training and competence. Instructors are expected to foster learner success, assess learner achievement, and continually improve learning opportunities. Instructors teach in a variety of learning environments including face-to-face, online, web-conferencing, and hybrid classrooms. Instructors are expected to continually improve the overall quality and delivery of learning, including the support of program and collegewide initiatives.

  • Create performance-based assessment plans, employ a variety of formative and summative assessment strategies, communicate assessment results in a timely fashion to promote student learning, and use assessment results to improve instruction.
  • Demonstrate professional behaviors to support teaching and learning and utilize varied strategies for managing the learning environment.
  • Identify exit learning outcomes and external standards, develop competencies that describe intended learning outcomes, create performance-based plans and assessment tasks for each course, develop learning objectives and plans, prepare syllabi, and utilize a quality review process to validate curriculum.
  • Utilize a variety of data analysis tools, analyze data from teaching and learning experiences, and use data to inform decision making about the teaching and learning process.
  • Assess effectiveness in embracing diversity, examine the impact of college, community, and student demographics on teaching and learning, and create an inclusive, effective learning environment that addresses barriers and provides reasonable accommodations.
  • Model the Employability Essentials expected of Northwood Tech students, which are to communicate clearly, think critically, and demonstrate professionalism.
  • Collaborate with student services in the selection, admission, and enrollment of students. Coordinate HIT program orientation for students. Arrange for student counseling when necessary.
  • Manage and administer the HIT program, including: Program planning-serve as lead for program coordination and strategic planning, develop and implement program evaluation processes and strategies, maintain CAHIIM accreditation.
  • Collaborate with Dean of Health Sciences and Associate Dean of Health Sciences to: schedule courses, including making recommendations regarding curriculum assignments of HIT/MCS program faculty, plan and manage program budget, including supply and equipment budgets for HIT/MCS program, participate in selection of faculty and staff, including hiring, orientation, and coaching.
  • Supervise and onboard part-time HIT/MCS faculty.
  • Approve staff development opportunities for full- and part-time program faculty.
  • Assume leadership role in assessing instructional effectiveness of the HIT/MCS program.
  • Serve as lead faculty member for marketing and promoting the HIT/MCS program.
  • Advise program students.
  • Plan and participate in Advisory Committee Meetings.
  • Attend WTCS, State, National and/or Accrediting Body meetings/conferences, as needed.
  • Participate in professional organizations related to program area.
  • Participate in establishment and maintenance of professional practice experience (PPE) sites and placement of students at PPE sites.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Degree & Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in field or closely related field
  • Minimum of two years (4,000 hours) related occupational experience (e.g., Director - Medical Records, Certified Procedural Coder, Certified Coding Specialist, etc.) of which at least one year (2,000 hours) shall be within 5 years prior to the date of appointment
  • Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to obtain driver's license and insurance coverage in accordance with College policy

Preferred:

  • Master's degree
  • Previous teaching experience
