Job Family Description

Material management involves the strategic planning, procurement, storage/inventory, and distribution of materials, supplies and products essential for the organization's operations. Material management personnel are responsible for the flow of supplies and products within the organization, and to/from external locations as appropriate.

Discipline Description

In hazardous material transportation roles, individuals are tasked with safely handling, packaging, and moving of potentially dangerous substances, such as chemicals or radioactive materials, from one location to another. They adhere strictly to federal regulations, safety protocols and procedures, and they handle specialized equipment. Hazardous Material Transportation Representatives (HMTR) are responsible for preparing and certifying offsite shipping documentation, guidance to shippers on package selections, markings and placarding, and compliance examinations.

Some Typical Duties & Responsibilities Include:

As a Hazardous Material Shipper, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and compliant packaging and shipment of hazardous materials. Your responsibilities will include packaging hazardous materials for shipment,
completing and verifying all necessary shipping documentation, and providing final approval for all hazardous materials Electronic Shipping Orders (ESOs). You will collaborate with various departments to ensure that materials are correctly prepared, labeled, and shipped in compliance with all relevant transportation regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
* Package hazardous materials for shipment, ensuring they are adequately protected and labeled in compliance with safety protocols.
* Complete shipping documentation for hazardous materials shipments accurately and promptly.
* Provide final approval for hazardous materials Electronic Shipping Orders (ESOs) in the "Traffic Services ESOs" system.
* Offer placards and stage hazardous materials shipments for carriers, ensuring all safety measures are in place.
* Notify Hazardous Material Transportation Regulators (HMTRs) of shipment departures to implement emergency response requirements.
* Brief drivers on Transportation Safety Plan (TSP) responsibilities when applicable.
* Check and examine hazardous materials pallets and assist in the QA Receipt Inspection Group with handling discrepant materials.
* Assist Chemical Coordinator with various tasks, including technical questions and reviewing Safety Data Sheets.
* Periodically review inbound receipts for correct marking and labeling of hazardous materials.
* Interpret and provide guidance on Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Material Regulations for classifying and characterizing standard/non-standard hazardous materials for shipment by highway and air transportation.
* Advise Packaging and Transportation (P&T) personnel and external customers on transportation safety, regulatory interpretations, and compliance.
* Manage projects and tasks independently, ensuring safety and compliance, with guidance provided only for complex situations.
* Assist with packing non-hazardous materials packages as needed.
This position requires a thorough understanding of hazardous material shipping regulations, attention to detail, and the ability to manage tasks efficiently while adhering to all safety and compliance standards.

Required Qualifications

* Associate's degree in relevant field plus completion of applicable certification or on-the-job training plus at least three years of experience (YOE) in an applicable role, OR High school diploma plus completion of applicable certification or on-the-job training plus at least five years of experience (YOE) in an applicable role
* Equivalencies to experience and education requirements will be considered

Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with Hazardous Material Regulations such as DOT (10, 40, 49 CFR), IATA, ICAO, EPA, and RCRA.
Professional Licenses/Certifications: Trained and/or certified in hazardous material shipping, including but not limited to Radioactive Material Transportation, Hazardous Waste Transportation,
Mixed Waste Transportation, Advanced Hazardous Materials Transportation, and Air Transportation.

Security Clearance Information

SRNS is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug & alcohol test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, criminal records, and employment history, and education verifications. Positions with SRNS may require applicants to obtain and maintain a DOE L or Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. Factors such as pre-employment background review results, dual citizenship status, and unpaid and/or unfiled taxes may impact your ability to obtain a security clearance.
