Function:

Finance & Accounting Job Summary:The tax analyst applies a strong understanding of indirect tax and prepares the reporting for excise tax (including tonnage fees), property tax, annual/business filings, and sales/use tax. The tax analyst will assist with tax audits and various tax projects. The tax analyst will maintain a strong working knowledge of current indirect tax laws. Job Description:

Main Duties

  • Prepares tonnage tax returns, property tax reporting, annual reports, federal excise tax reports, sales and use tax returns, and miscellaneous reports.
  • Ensures appropriate documentation and support of indirect tax filings, tracks the timely submission of indirect filings, and prepares requests for payment required with indirect tax filings.
  • Coordinates with various outside service providers.
  • Researches and resolves discrepancies identified during the indirect tax filing process.
  • Prepares accruals and analysis of financial accounts for tonnage tax, property tax, sales and use tax, franchise tax, and excise tax liabilities for review by manager.
  • Assists with audits of excise tax (including tonnage fees), property tax, sales and use taxes, and other indirect taxes.
  • Assists with special tax projects (tax incentive programs), the filing of Canadian GST, non-profit/employee benefit, and unclaimed property.
  • Utilizes tax technology tools to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Identifies and implements process improvements to streamline indirect tax compliance and reporting.
  • Performs other duties and assists tax analysts as needed.

Internal Controls

  • Understands and complies with established departmental processes and procedures designed to support internal controls efforts. Identifies and brings to the attention of department management internal controls deficiencies.

IV. Incumbent Attributes:

  • AA/AAS including some college courses in accounting desirable. BS/BA or its equivalent in a related field (Accounting, Finance, Economics) typically preferred.
  • At least one year of related professional work experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with property, sales, and excise taxation (including tonnage fees) preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be PC literate within a Windows environment and have strong working knowledge of Microsoft applications.
  • Ability to function effectively as a team member in a deadline-oriented environment.

Estimated base pay for the position is typically between: $72,990 - $96,200.

The actual base pay for the position may be influenced by factors such as education, training, skills, qualifications, competencies, years of experience, job-related knowledge, and scope of the role, and could be outside of the posted pay range.
