More than half the world's population sees AP journalism every day. The Associated Press seeks a talented medical reporter to be based in any U.S. city. We're looking for a collaborative reporter who will work closely with AP colleagues in the U.S. and across the world to consistently break news and produce enterprise stories built for digital audiences. You will contribute to AP's coverage of health and medical news, with a focus on cancer, genetics, advances in understanding how the human body works - and biology more broadly. Our ideal candidate is someone who has a deep interest in health and medicine, who looks critically at the news of the day, who can make complicated subjects approachable and understandable, who can make connections between science and real people's lives, and who can bring stories about medical discoveries to life. This is a staff position covered by AP's agreement with the News Media Guild. This temporary, grant-funded position lasts through August 31, 2026. Responsibilities: As an AP reporter, you will work in multiple media formats and collaborate with diverse teams of journalists in text, photo, video, audio, digital/social, interactive and graphics. Reporting to the global health and science editor, you will generate story ideas that resonate both in the United States and around the world. The position may involve occasional travel, and the successful candidate should be prepared to leave on short notice as news needs arise. You should also be able and willing to work any shift, including at night and on weekends, or as coverage demands, as AP is a 24/7 operation. We're looking for someone who:
Required Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications: A track record of writing about health and medical-related issues is preferred. You should have excellent interpersonal skills and be eager to learn from mentors across the organization. You should have strong organizational skills with the ability to juggle multiple projects across formats and deliver success on complex, challenging story lines. We will consider strong candidates who do not meet every listed qualification. You may use a cover letter to describe the unique qualifications you would bring to this role. This position is covered by The Associated Press' contract with the News Media Guild, which provides for an annual salary for Class A staff of between $85,214 and $105,000 based on location and years of professional experience. AP may offer additional compensation based on a job candidate's skills, qualifications and market location.
