CORE RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS:

The Paralegal position is responsible for providing legal and administrative support to in-house counsel. Legal support includes, without limitation, those tasks and responsibilities generally performed by paralegals in law firms and corporate legal departments. The position requires familiarity and expertise in the assigned area(s) of specialty (e.g., corporate governance, securities, general commercial transactions, environmental, regulatory, employee benefits, immigration, litigation, and intellectual property). The assigned area of specialty for this position is litigation.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Investigation:



  • Assist attorneys in gathering pertinent facts and information necessary for attorneys to complete legal work product.
  • Collaborate with attorneys and corporate departments in the collection of documents and identification of appropriate individuals to gather information necessary for attorneys to complete legal work product.
  • Interview individuals as needed and ask appropriate questions to understand facts necessary for attorneys to render legal advice and complete legal work product.
  • Acquire and maintain knowledge of company systems, tools, and processes and procedures relevant to gathering necessary information.
  • Assist attorneys with responses to requests for information and documents.
  • Coordinate large, complex, electronic and paper intensive document requests.
  • Coordinate release of records, e.g., medical, employment, financial and business, in response to subpoenas, Court Orders, attorney requests, internal and external investigations and other inquiries.
  • Assist attorneys with research relating to relevant legal specialties and legal issues.


2. Drafting Legal Documents and Correspondence:



  • Assist attorneys in preparation of legal documents pertinent to assigned legal specialty(ies), such as discovery responses, third-party subpoena responses, pleadings, and similar documents.
  • Prepare basic legal documents from templates and forms as requested by attorneys.
  • Assist in the timely filing of legal documents.
  • Draft professional communications and correspondence to internal corporate departments and external parties


3. Support of Corporate Functions:



  • Assist attorneys with matters relating to a variety of corporate functions and legal issues.
  • Collaborate with others within the legal department who have different legal specialties and assignments advising other corporate departments.
  • Collaborate with a host of corporate departments to complete tasks assigned by attorneys.


4. Document Management and Administrative Support:



  • Review and organize electronic and paper documents and records as assigned by attorneys.
  • Maintain accurate records and files in compliance with document retention policy and by utilizing legal department processes and platforms on matters assigned by attorneys.
  • When applicable, create indices identifying the documents and records as assigned by attorneys.
  • Oversee the use of electronic matter management, docketing, billing, budget, and other systems.
  • Assist in the processing of new matters and following retention policies with closed matters.
  • Assist in the preparation of various reports and analyses concerning matters assigned by attorneys.

FORMAL EDUCATION:

Required:



  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution OR High School Diploma/GED + Paralegal Certificate/Associate's Degree in Paralegal Studies.


Preferred:



  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution


KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:

Required:



  • Requires at least 2+ years of SHW experience OR 1+ year of legal experience.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship.


Preferred:



  • Paralegal experience in a claims and litigation environment.


TECHNICAL/SKILL REQUIREMENTS:

Required:



  • Microsoft 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, SharePoint, Teams, etc.) and Office Suite
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and written and verbal communication skills


Preferred:



  • Experience with Thomson Reuters Legal Tracker matter management and billing platform
  • Skilled in resolving conflicts and minor claims
  • Adobe Acrobat
