The Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA) is a qualified person who functions at all times under the direction of a Registered Physical Therapist (RPT) and carries out the therapy plan of care as assigned by RPT.

Responsibilities

1. Provides ongoing therapy services in accordance with the established plan after the initial evaluation has been made by the RPT and the PTA has been oriented to the plan of treatment.

2. The PTA must confer with the RPT at least weekly and when there is a change in condition. This must be documented in the patient's EMR which includes a review of the current plan of treatment and current patient status.

3. Contributes to the plan of treatment and discharge planning.

4. Documentation is completed in the EMR within 24 hours after visits are made.

5. Educates the patient and caregiver on the plan of care, safety issues, prescribed exercises, and response to teaching.

6. Assists patients and caregivers in obtaining necessary equipment and provides instruction on how to use equipment.

7. Responsible for maintaining productivity and appropriately communicates needs for additional visits when necessary.

8. Reports all incidents that occur to the RN case manager, RPT, and Manager, Therapy Services.

9. Participates in staff meetings, in-service programs, and other meetings as requested.


Qualifications

EDUCATION

Graduate of a two year accredited physical therapist assistant program approved by the American Physical Therapy Association.

EXPERIENCE

Minimum two years clinical experience as a PTA in the acute or sub-acute setting. Home care experience desirable.

LICENSURE

Physical Therapist Assistant with Valid (or eligible) Connecticut license.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Excellent written and verbal communication. Ability to effectively work with multidisciplines. Must be adaptable, flexible, have the ability to learn quickly, and use critical thinking skills. Strong computer skills.

PHYSICAL DEMAND

Ability to perform tasks involving physical activity which may include heavy lifting and extensive bending and standing.
