The Department of Chemistry at the University of Texas at Austin is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time, non-tenure professional track faculty position. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the education of students in both general and inorganic chemistry, in both lecture and laboratory settings. The successful candidate will play a key role in the academic development and growth of the department by providing high-quality instruction and fostering a collaborative and engaging learning environment. Primary Duties:
- Teach Multiple Sections of General Chemistry: The faculty member will be responsible for delivering lectures for general chemistry courses, which may include both introductory and intermediate-level classes.
- Coordinate and Teach Upper-Division Inorganic Chemistry Labs: The successful candidate will oversee and instruct students in upper-division inorganic chemistry laboratories, ensuring that the students gain hands-on experience and develop the necessary practical skills.
- Participate in Course Development Activities: In addition to teaching, the faculty member will actively contribute to course development, including the design and improvement of syllabi, learning materials, and lab activities.
- Lead Review Sessions: The faculty member will organize and conduct review sessions to help students grasp challenging concepts and excel in their coursework.
- Hold Regular Office Hours: The position requires holding consistent office hours to provide academic support to students, offering guidance and addressing any questions related to course material.
- Mentor and Instruct Teaching Assistants: The faculty member will guide and supervise teaching assistants, providing mentorship and ensuring that they are effectively supporting students in labs and review sessions.
- Review and Update Lab Manuals: The faculty member will periodically review and revise lab manuals to ensure the content is current and reflects best practices in teaching and safety protocols. Additionally, the faculty member will develop new experiments to enhance the laboratory experience.
- Collaborate with Stockroom Staff: The faculty member will work closely with the stockroom staff to ensure that the necessary chemicals, supplies, and equipment are available and in good condition, facilitating smooth lab operations.
- Perform Basic Instrument Maintenance and Repair: The position requires familiarity with laboratory instruments and equipment, as the faculty member will be responsible for ensuring that instruments are properly maintained and repaired as needed.
- Ensure Laboratory Safety: The faculty member will be responsible for enforcing safety protocols in the lab, ensuring that all students and teaching assistants adhere to safety guidelines. This includes arranging for the timely disposal of chemical waste in compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
- Other Lab Course-Related Duties: The faculty member will carry out other responsibilities related to the lab courses, including assisting with lab preparation, grading, and addressing any issues that may arise in the laboratory setting.
Appointment Details:
- The position carries a nine-month appointment, with the contract renewed annually based on demonstrated teaching excellence and the department's needs.
- Summer teaching opportunities are sometimes available, though assignments may vary depending on departmental requirements and faculty availability.
Qualifications
A PhD in Chemistry or a closely related field is required for this position. The ideal candidate will have expertise in general and inorganic chemistry. Experience teaching at the undergraduate level is preferred, particularly in large lecture and laboratory settings. A proven ability to effectively engage and mentor students, as well as experience in curriculum development, will be considered a strong asset. Additionally, a demonstrated commitment to fostering a dynamic and supportive learning environment is highly valued.
