Additional Locations Job Description Summary The Environmental, Health & Safety Specialist (EHS) works as part of the site Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) organization to maintain compliance to federal, state, and corporate health, safety, environmental regulations for the site. This position may serve as the principle point of contact for EHS metric data gathering and reporting for the St. Louis Plant. The candidate must exhibit a working knowledge of EHS systems and principles, working knowledge of the laws, ordinances and regulations governing EHS compliance efforts. The candidate must be an independent worker with a strong sense of customer service. Please note, the EHS Specialist position shall be required to work onsite and is not a remote position.
Job Description ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provides input in the revision, updating and improvement of various site EHS Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's).
- Contributes as a team member in analyzing and continually improving the site's Safety Culture.
- Oversee the day-to-day administration of the site's EHS recordkeeping / data management system.
- Takes effective steps to ensure that workplace conditions comply with applicable federal and state environmental and occupational safety/health standards.
- Assist with various investigations such as employee injuries, employee complaints, chemical releases/spills, and near miss.
- Assist with the development, implementation, and delivery of various EHS training courses.
- Assist with the day-to-administration and review of the sites Life Saving Rules and Permits (i.e., Confined Space Entry, Safe Work, Hot Work, Elevated Work, Lockout/Tagout, etc. ).
- Complete period hazard observations and/or process confirmation and report within the site's EHS recordkeeping / data management system.
- Provides input on equipment installation, start-up operation and trouble shooting.
- Supplies the highest level of internal and external customer service while having the ability to diplomatically challenge established procedures and systems.
- Works with departments to identify and remediate hazards.
- Assists with the completion of various environmental inspections: Stormwater inspections, Hazardous Waste storage area, SPCC inspections, and Leak-Detection and Repair (LDAR).
- Ability prepare, calibrate, operate and maintain various air monitoring and industrial hygiene monitoring equipment.
- Respond to plant emergencies as needed. Provide either field support or command center subject matter expertise during response to all emergencies.
- Assist in compliance with DHS CFATS standards.
DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC/NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation.
- Required to participate in department on-call schedule.
- Assists with project reviews for compliance needs.
- Assist with the hazardous waste inspections and shipments.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education:
- Bachelor's required in a related field such as Occupational, Safety, and Health, Environmental Health, Chemical Engineering or related safety/technical field is preferred.
Experience:
- Recent college graduate
- 1 - 3 years of EHS related experience, preferred
- Previous experience in a pharmaceutical, chemical, or manufacturing environment preferred
Skills/Qualifications: Other Skills
- Must be able to walk, climb, and wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), and Level A or B protective ensembles.
- Knowledge of Health, Safety and Environmental Management Systems.
- Knowledge of Code of Federal Regulations such as 29 CFR 1910 General Industry, 29 CFR 1926 Construction Industry standards, and 40 CFR Environmental Protection, a plus.
- Effective communication, interpersonal, and technical writing skills.
- Team oriented, and person who can and is willing to develop positive relationships with others.
- Ability to handle multiple priorities as assigned by supervisor.
- Detail-oriented with the ability to work under tight deadlines.
- Self-directed; ability to be self-starter with tasks and responsibilities.
- Must be able to work as a team member in a fast paced environment.
- Ability to communicate with all levels of the organization, from operations to senior management, both oral and written format.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite of products, including Word and Excel
- Training or Public speaking experience
- Competent conflict management skills.
