Job Summary

This position supports this Departmental purpose by providing phlebotomy services to adolescent/adult/geriatric/pediatric/neonate patients. Additional functions include the timely and accurate specimen receipt, accessioning, preparation and/or processing for analysis on various body fluids, tissues, and fecal material. Functions also include answering telephones, providing specimen collection information and results, filing, record keeping, supply inventory, ordering, equipment and general area maintenance. Incumbent will be assigned to any one of the outpatient laboratory locations within the Primary Care Network Clinics (PCN)for phlebotomy/venipuncture services. Additional laboratory functions may include specimen dispatch to department and/or referral laboratories, and providing courier services (utilizing University vehicles and/or by foot).

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Certified Phlebotomist Technician
  • Must be a Certified Phlebotomy Technician, licensed by the State of California Department of Public Health (CDPH)
  • Must have current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) or UC Davis Health CPR or obtain within 3 months from hire date
  • No Minimum Education required
  • Must have the skills and experience to perform adult, geriatric, adolescent, pediatric and neonatal venipuncture and neonatal skin puncture in both an inpatient and outpatient setting.
  • Knowledge of laboratory specimen handling, processing and shipping requirements.
  • Knowledge of computer systems such as EMR, LIS, email, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work on several projects or tasks simultaneously and to exercise appropriate judgment when setting priorities.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete work to meet required turnaround times and deadlines.
  • Manual dexterity for pipetting and/or aliquoting specimens.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of Clinical and Anatomic Pathology specimen types, including blood, tissues and body fluids.
  • Knowledge of Clinical and Anatomic Pathology policies, procedures, processes and workflows for phlebotomy and specimen processing, handling and transport.
  • Ability to maintain legible and accurate records.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions, and to use good judgement in handling situations not covered by written or verbal instructions.
  • Possess effective verbal communication skills to answer questions from internal and external customers in a clear and concise manner.
  • Possess written communication skills to write clear emails, EMR messages, and reports to convey information appropriately.
  • Ability to resolve problems within scope of job duties and knowledge.
  • Ability to maintain composure and flexibility in an evolving environment.
  • Ability to work as a member of a team and to assist colleagues as needed.
  • Ability to assume a lead role when requested.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, follow and adhere to HIPAA regulations.
  • Ability to recognize aberrant processes that could lead to process failures; possesses excellent problem-solving skills and utilizes resources effectively for resolution.

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is a large, diverse multi-site department whose mission is to create a healthier world through bold innovation in population health, education, technology and research. Work Environment

UC Davis is a smoke and tobacco free campus effective January 1, 2014.
