Job Overview

As one of the oldest medical schools in the country, the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine (COM) has a reputation for training best-in-class health care professionals and developing cutting-edge procedures and research that improves the health and clinical care of patients. In partnership with the UC Health academic healthcare system and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, College of Medicine's faculty are transforming the world of medicine every day.

A 12-month, full-time (100% FTE) Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Critical Care Fellowship position is available in the Department of Medical Education. The Fellowship runs from September 2025 through September 2026. This fellowship program enables advanced practice nurses and physician assistants (APPs) to acquire robust clinical experiences and critical care knowledge base within the multi-faceted critical care areas at UC Medical Center and West Chester Hospital Clinical rotations include Internal Medicine, Neurology, Cardiology, Nephrology, Hepatology, and more.

The APP Fellow is expected to participate in protected, non-clinical didactic education in the form of lectures, simulation, skills labs, case studies, presentations, and other components of the critical care fellow curriculum as determined by the coordinator and director. The APP Fellow is also responsible for completion of an evidence-based practice or quality-improvement project during their tenure as a fellow.

Essential Functions

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary health care team caring for critically ill patients, managing both their acute and chronic health care needs.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in core knowledge inclusive of assessment, treatment, and coordination of patient care.
  • Perform appropriate history and physical for complex, acute, critical, and chronically ill patients.
  • Order and interpret diagnostic and therapeutic tests.
  • Prescribe appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities.
  • Monitor the effectiveness of interventions.
  • Maintain accurate medical records.
  • Collaborate with other providers and members of the health care team in delivery of care and make appropriate referrals when needed.
  • Educate patients and families about medical conditions and treatment plans.
  • Facilitate staff, patient, and family decision making using evidence-based practice.
  • Participate in research and development projects.
  • Participate in education of nurse practitioners, nurse practitioner students and medical students.
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need.

Minimum Requirements

Nurse Practitioner:

Required Education

A Master's degree in Nursing and graduation from an accredited ANA approved Nurse Practitioner Program.

Required Trainings/Certifications



  • National certification by ANCC or AANP.
  • Current/Valid license in the state of Ohio.

Physician Assistant:

Required Education



  • Graduation from a Physician Assistant program accredited by the Accreditation Review.
  • Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessor agencies.


Required Trainings/Certifications



  • National Certification as a Physician Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.
  • Current/Valid license in the state of Ohio.
