The College of Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University is seeking a Shop Instructor for the 2nd shift (2:30pm to 11pm) scheduled Monday through Friday. The ideal candidate will support and maintain shop facilities that are a focal point for education and research activities within the college and across the university. You will join a team of full-time professional staff and numerous student workers, to train hundreds of students, faculty and staff users per year in metal machining and fabrication and other areas of TechSpark. In addition to skills training, personnel teach design-building skills by helping students convert an idea into a physical prototype that is testable by the intended user and designed for manufacture. During the academic year, the facilities have extensive open hours, including evenings and weekends, to support student projects for courses, clubs, entrepreneurial, and extracurricular activities. During open hours, personnel actively work with students to ensure safe operation of equipment, provide additional skills instruction, and advise on component design and construction. These activities include helping students work through issues such as part geometry, selection of materials, tolerances, and more. Prototyping is supported through the integration of a computer cluster, traditional machine shop, woodshop, and rapid fabrication lab that are located adjacent to each other, and staff frequently support student activities across all areas.

Responsibilities:

  • Teach and supervise students in the safe and effective use of metal machining equipment.
  • Run open hours that enable self-service access to the facility.
