Job Description

General Summary:

The External Communications Manager executes external communications activities for Vertex's approved pain medicine and for the company's pipeline pain program to support the overall business objectives. The External Communications Manager will also support broader communications team initiatives and projects, as needed, including media relations support, content creation and approvals and executive communications.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the execution of unbranded/branded campaigns
  • Develop monthly corporate communications activity report for leadership
  • Help coordinate placement of corporate ads in key medical trades
  • Lead submission and oversight of jobs in internal review process
  • Develop metrics decks for major campaigns (unbranded and branded campaigns, PRs/earned media, social, and other key milestones)
  • Support coordination of corporate ad placements in alignment with overall business strategy
  • Support all aspects of earned media strategy, including pitch development, outreach to media, preparation for media interviews, brief and spokesperson messages, and metric reporting
  • Help support documentation for contracting processes (to engage with external stakeholders)
  • Support the social content calendar development and execution
  • Support the development of creative assets, social posts and internal review process for key pain congresses and milestone announcements
  • Support development and review of internal communications
  • Liaise with our PR agency of record colleagues to drive the execution of communications activities

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Strong understanding of pharmaceutical/biotech business model, and regulatory and processes including communications guidelines and market access environment
  • Experience in developing and implementing external communications plans for medicines pre- and post-launch
  • Ability to understand and accurately communicate complex science concepts
  • Demonstrated experience in healthcare media/PR relations (traditional and social) and/or PR agency experience or in-house at another pharmaceutical/biotech company required
  • Knowledge of healthcare and industry media and reporting trends
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience managing multiple projects (timelines, budgets, priorities) simultaneously; flexibility with a results-oriented focus
  • Strong collaboration and project management skills

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, liberal arts, business or science-oriented field (or international equivalent)
  • Typically requires four-five years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience

Pay Range:

$122,400 - $183,600

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.

1. Hybrid: work remotely up to two days per week; or select
