DESCRIPTION

Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego operates one of the largest academic research fleets in the world, supporting ocean and earth science research through state-of-the-art vessels equipped for global expeditions. SIO research ships facilitate physical, chemical, biological, geological, and geophysical studies of the oceans, ranging from local trips to multi-year missions.

The Oiler assists engineers in the operation, maintenance, and repair of engineering equipment aboard research vessels. This position requires extended periods at sea and the ability to perform physically demanding tasks in a maritime environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist engineers in the operation, repair, and maintenance of engineering systems and equipment.
  • Stand underway watches at sea and generator watches while in port.
  • Repair, maintain, and operate deck winches and other shipboard machinery.
  • Perform routine maintenance, including wiping oil, tool upkeep, cleaning, and painting engine equipment and spaces.
  • Carry out day work and other assigned duties as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Working knowledge of how to operate, maintain and repair ship's machinery and emergency equipment.

  • Ability to stand watches at sea and in port.

  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.

  • Ability to accurately read gauges for oil, fuel and water levels, temperatures and pressures.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing using standard office software applications.

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and independently organize available work time to meet assigned responsibilities.

  • Ability to interpret and use technical drawing and documentation.

  • Proven critical thinking skills using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.

  • Knowledge of USCG, ABS, and University safety regulations and standards.

  • Oral and written command of the English language.

  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills to establish and maintain cooperative working relationship with diverse groups.

  • Knowledge of USCG/DOT regulations for chemical drug and alcohol testing.

Licenses and Certifications
  • Must be able to maintain a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Document (MMD) or Credential (MMC) with QMED Oiler endorsement.

  • Must be able to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC) issued by Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

  • U.S. Coast Guard Standards of Training, Certification and Watch keeping for Seafarers (STCW95).

  • Vessel Personnel with Designated Security Duties (VPDSD).

  • Other endorsements may be required.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Ability and willingness to go to sea for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to pass physical examination and U.S. Coast Guard (DOT) regulations for Chemical Drug and Alcohol testing.

  • U.S. Passport.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $67,568 - $98,407 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $32.36 - $47.13

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
