Job Purpose:

The Paralegal will perform legal work and other Legal Department tasks under the supervision of the Deputy General Counsel and General Counsel. The Legal Department is responsible for all the legal affairs of Peoples Bank and its affiliates and subsidiaries. The Paralegal will work closely with the Deputy General Counsel, General Counsel and Legal Operations Manager as well as business stakeholders at all levels of the company.

Job Duties:

  • Manage the day-to-day flow of matters coming into the legal department.
  • Receive, research and respond to routine requests for records (subpoenas, search warrants etc.) using the Legal Department's subpoena administration software within established procedures and supervision.
  • Process legal invoices using the Legal Department's electronic billing system.
  • Review, research and process legal notices (legal summons, complaints, etc.) within established procedures to make sure stakeholders are notified and deadlines are met.
  • Be a point of first contact for calls and inquiries coming into the Legal Department and keeping the legal team informed.
  • Implement and administer legal holds of internal records using the Legal Department's legal hold software.
  • Research and respond to legal discovery requests for bank records and other bank documents.
  • Coordinate communications with outside counsel.
  • Maintain a variety of legal files and case information using the Legal Department's matter management system.
  • Serve as a back-up to the Legal Operations Manager in responding to consumer complaints filed with the banking regulators.
  • Build strong relationships within the legal team and other cross-functional stakeholders, including Retail, Finance, Accounts Payable, Collections and Special Assets
  • Will perform special projects as assigned.

Education, Job Skills and Qualifications:

  • Associate's degree or higher required.
  • Paralegal certification preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years' experience in a professional office environment, preferably a law firm or corporate legal department.
  • Ability to maintain discretion and manage confidential information.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills including the ability to maintain a courteous and professional demeanor.
  • Willingness to be a team player and embrace the Legal Department's commitment to provide excellent "customer service" to internal clients.
  • Ability to complete professional documents utilizing good grammar, spelling and format skills, including accurate preparation of legal letters, memoranda and reports.
  • Intermediate knowledge of software applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to learn and utilize web-based applications used by Legal Department.
  • Ability to grasp and interpret routine legal documents.
  • Good organizational skills and detail oriented.
  • Ability to prioritize work and organize own time.
  • Knowledge of banking products and services preferred but not required.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic knowledge of corporate law helpful but not necessary.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Associates' Degree or higher required.
  • Minimum of 7 years' experience in a professional office environment, preferably a law firm or corporate legal department
