Summary of Job Duties:The Clinical Specialist is a licensed nurse who functions within the three spheres of influence; patient-nurse-system. Must possess advanced knowledge of nursing practice and the ability to apply standards within the Inpatient and/or Outpatient practice areas.Co-Leadership with the Spine Medical Directors to coordinate the development and implementation of the UAMS Spine Program while remaining consistent with the leadership of the Neurosciences Service Line. Lead the Spine Steering committee to establish and prioritize both long-term and short-term goals within the program. This includes but is not limited to the work for continued Joint Commission readiness and site visits. Collaborates with key personnel in departments that provide care to the spine patient including but not limited to Neuroscience and Orthopaedic leadership teams, inpatient nursing at Main and TOSH, rehabilitation services, perioperative staff, anesthesia, interventional pain, orthopaedic and neurosurgery spine attending. Qualifications:

Education Requirements:

  • Associate RN plus six (6) years of experience (ability to obtain BSN within 2 (two) years of hire) OR

  • Bachelor RN plus four (4) years of experience

Experience Requirements:

  • Four (4) years in nursing with two (2) years in a specialty area. Special project involvement.

  • Two (2) years of experience in a leadership role (including Charge Nurse, Team Lead, or RN IV level at UAMS)

  • National RN Certification (or ability to obtain it within 1 (one) year of hire.

  • Active RN license & BLS

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Must possess strong communication and problem-solving skills

  • Able to follow oral and written instructions and communicate with other effectively

  • Ability to document services provided

  • Understanding of regulatory and compliance organizations/agencies

  • Excellent customer relations skills

  • Understands and abides by confidentiality policies

Preferred Experience:

  • Master's in Nursing

  • Experience in an academic medical setting

  • National Nursing Certification in the specialty area of for the position

Additional Information:

Responsibilities:

  • Reviews and analyses data monthly evaluating for trends and makes changes as necessary.

  • Facilitates performance improvement projects that results in improvement in quality outcomes, decreased length of stay, and increased patient satisfaction. This includes the facilitation of four required quality improvement projects, required process improvement projects delegated by Joint Commission, and patient satisfaction for continued certification. This requires the time to review the data each month. The data must be analyzed for trends. Implement changes amongst a variety of departments. It is the coordinator's responsibility to assure interventions are completed in a timely manner to uphold the highest standards in patient care and continue to improve quality measures. The coordinator assumes direct responsibility for outcomes of projects.

  • Serves as a resource for other departments for policy decisions.

  • Provides clinical expertise in case reviews.

  • Works with quality to ensure compliance. This requires frequent communication throughout the month.

  • Collaborates and assists with compliance with adopted Clinical Practice Guidelines, policies and procedures for the both the hospital and Joint Commission.

  • The Joint Commission recommended that the Coordinator serve as a navigator throughout the perioperative process ensuring consistent care provisions throughout the spine service. They recommended complex cases be communicated with specialty services in the same manner throughout the patient experience. Their recommendations were that the Coordinator serve as a Spine Navigator.

  • Spine is a participant in the Bundled Payments for Care Improvement (BCPI) initiative. This requires continued focus in cost containment while operating at a higher quality standard. Trends are discussed with the Transitions of Care Nurse and changes are implemented accordingly.

  • Other duties as assigned.
