Job Summary

The Assistant Director, Early Phase Clinical Trials Program reports to, and is directly responsible to, the Executive Director, Office of Clinical Research. The incumbent will be responsible for the development and growth of UCDCCC's early phase clinical trials portfolio for oncology indications. They will expand an already robust portfolio of early-phase cancer clinical trials, leveraging UCDCCC's status as an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, an NCI National Clinical Trials Network Lead Academic Participating Site, an NCI Experimental Therapeutics Clinical Trials Network (ETCTN) site, and a member of the University of California Cancer Consortium. #CA-SB

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload license and/or certification if required of the position

  • Clinical research certification (SOCRA, ACRP) is required within 6 months of hire.
  • Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science or equivalent experience.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of progressive leadership experience.
  • Advanced experience in a research environment required.
  • Extensive experience with early phase clinical research operations and management of the workflow of a large and complex clinical research portfolio
  • Demonstrated experience supervising staff in a clinical research environment. Demonstrated experience managing people with a wide range of educational backgrounds and skills. Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead and motivate others. Demonstrated experience in training others in the field of research.
  • Ability to work independently, with maximum self-direction, while maintaining fully transparent and close communication, working collaboratively with and reporting outcomes to the leadership team.
  • Excellent organization and communication skills including demonstrated experience working with key decision makers.
  • Analytical skills to evaluate information, practices and procedures and make recommendations for effective solutions, strategies and/or approaches.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply and implement creative solutions to complex problems
  • Ability to prepare written materials of a diverse nature using correct grammar, effective diction, correct spelling and appropriate form to establish good rapport with community sites, physicians, patients, caregivers, UCDH healthcare staff and fellow OCR team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others collaboratively, cohesively, and with bidirectional support in a team environment.
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of computer operating systems and proficiency with word processing, excel spreadsheets and graphics software.
  • Ability to work overtime as work demands.
  • Strong leadership, team building, and problem-solving skills as well as demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multiple disciplines (i.e., physicians, administrative, supervisory, and allied health staff).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Masters preferred in Business or Healthcare field.
  • Experience overseeing oncology clinical research.
  • Experience working at an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Department Overview

The UC Davis Comprehensive Cancer Center (UCDCCC) is a campus-wide multidisciplinary matrix organization with the goal of promoting and enhancing cancer-relevant research and patient care at UC Davis. The Office of Clinical Research (OCR) is UCDCCC's centralized office for clinical research operations. The OCR supports the entire lifecycle of cancer-related clinical research protocols. This includes support for development and implementation of clinical trials, quality control of clinical research operations, and training and education services.

Department Specific Job Scope

The Assistant Director, Early Phase Clinical Trials Program is responsible for directing, administering and achieving operational goals and objectives in line with the UCDCCC's strategic plan and institutional strategic priorities. The individual will be responsible for leadership and overall facilitation of operational improvements and will work collaboratively with Principal Investigators engaged in early phase clinical research, clinical cancer operations staff, clinical/data research coordinators, research accounting/finance staff, and other ancillary departments (e.g. Laboratory, Pathology, Radiology, Investigational Drug Service, etc.). The individual must be proactive in identifying operational efficiencies for early phase clinical trial workflow in keeping with quality assurance principles and implement the necessary quality control methods and tools that will enhance and support the work of the early phase clinical research team.
