Job Responsibilities:

The Health and Wellness Coach provides safe and evidence-based coaching in a comprehensive and systematic manner and integrates your knowledge, skills and experiences to meet the needs of the clients throughout the continuum of care. Acts as a motivator and educational resource for the client using various skills, including motivational interviewing, problem solving, education, self-management and goal setting. Above all, the Health and Wellness Coach will help the client to co-create a personalized wellness plan and will assist with monitoring and adjusting the plan as necessary to achieve the best quality health outcomes, ensuring that the client's values guide the coaching experience. Demonstrates leadership skills in decision making and problem solving and has a respect for and an understanding of other disciplines, the Health and Wellness Coach operates solely within their scope of practice with appropriate referrals and collaboration with other multidisciplinary teams.



  • Provide 1:1 health coaching to Inova team members, their spouses or partners, and corporate/community clients
  • Cultivate client empowerment using coaching skills and competencies within a Motivational Interviewing framework
  • Partner with clients to co-create a personalized care plan, including concrete SMART goals, and assist with monitoring and adjusting the plan as necessary to achieve the best quality health outcomes
  • Support clients in assessing both potential barriers and strengths towards achieving health goals
  • Diligently track client's progress and provide ongoing feedback, support, and encouragement, troubleshooting and adapting their wellness plan as needed per their motivations and life circumstances
  • Document client's progress in dedicated HIPAA-compliant platform, while safeguarding client Protected Health Information
  • Ability to coach clients in person as well as virtually, using video-based platform
  • Ability to create a strong social presence within workgroups and build trusting and respectful relationships with team members/departments through positive interactions, providing service, and maintaining team member privacy and confidentiality
  • Maximize engagement of team member health and wellness-related activities via efficient and effective virtual and face-to-face interactions
  • Actively promotes team member participation in Inova Well-based and site-specific health and wellness activities, and serves as lead and role-model by participating as appropriate
  • Provide virtual and on-site wellness education, programming, presentations, seminars, workshops and well-being/team building retreats
  • Ability to garner support from administrators, department leaders and peer social leaders to support engagement of team member well-being
  • Ability to conduct non-invasive biometric measures (body composition, blood pressure, etc.) according to protocol in a variety of settings, including public settings; and provide care and maintenance of the required equipment
  • Reviews health risk assessment and biometric screening results with team members and supports them in selecting risk-appropriate wellness activities and/or lifestyle improvement interventions
  • Works within their professional scope of practice and refers out to other healthcare providers as needed; will not prescribe or diagnose for medical, emotional or mental issues, interpret lab results or suggest treatments or medication of any kind, unless formally trained, licensed and credentialed to do so
  • Intermediate proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint and Outlook and ability to learn additional computer-based documentation skills
  • Responsible for care of the computer and protection of personal health information as required by HIPAA
  • Develops and maintains competence in the use of health coaching skills and earns progressive certifications in each lifestyle domain
  • May perform additional duties as assigned.


Additional Requirements:



  • Work Schedule: Part-Time (20 hours/week)
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in related field (or relevant experience in lieu of degree equivalent to 4 years, LPN must have vocational degree)
  • Experience: 2 years of health coaching experience or new grad/recently certified
  • Certification: Health coaching certification from an accredited, National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) approved health coaching program (i.e. Wellcoaches, Duke Integrative, ACE) within 24 months of hire
  • Licensure: Licensed Practical Nurse Upon Start Required if LPN
