Overview:

Exercises independent judgment in evaluating, selecting, and applying creative techniques to design projects. Integrates community-centered strategies, storytelling, and cultural elements into the design process, contributing to original, contextually meaningful solutions. Emphasizes tactical urbanism, collaborative placemaking, and the development of innovative design interventions to address community needs. Passion for sustainability, cultural placemaking, and creating equitable community spaces. Anticipates job expectations and contributes to project solutions.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborates on urban and community design projects at various scales, focusing on storytelling, inclusivity, nature, stewardship and cultural relevance
  • Designs and implements tactical urbanism projects, such as temporary installations, pop-ups, and creative interventions that activate public spaces
  • Integrates artistic approaches into urban design, leveraging public art and cultural elements to foster community identity and engagement
  • Develops innovative design concepts that reflect the unique character, history, and aspirations of the communities served
  • Conducts site analysis, spatial analysis, and environmental impact studies to inform design solutions
  • Facilitates participatory design processes, including workshops, charrettes, and creative engagement activities
  • Creates compelling graphics, illustrations, and visualizations to communicate design intent and project narratives effectively
  • Coordinates with consultants, contractors, and stakeholders to align design goals with project objectives and community aspirations

Qualifications:

  • Accredited professional degree in Architecture, Urban Design, Urban Planning, Landscape Architecture or related field
  • Architectural registration, urban design/planning certifications (e.g., LEED ND, AICP, Ecodistricts AP) preferred or obtainable within one year of hire
  • Typically 3+ years of experience
  • Proficiency in design and visualization tools, including Revit, Rhino, Adobe Suite, Procreate, and GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS or QGIS)
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite preferred
  • Knowledge of sustainability and integrated design guidelines
  • Knowledge of zoning regulations, mobility planning, and integrated design guidelines
  • Strong storytelling, illustration, and graphic presentation skills, with an emphasis on community-focused narratives
  • Strong presentation skills and graphic and visualization skills to communicate design ideas at a variety of scales
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to work on multiple projects at the same time
  • Ability to maintain existing and build new client and community relationships
  • Ability to communicate in a clear, concise and professional manner both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to problem solve and apply innovative solutions
  • Ability to work and collaborate in a team environment
  • Ability to effectively meet deadlines at expected quality
  • Travel may be required
