Primary Purpose of Department
The Department of University Recreation ( UREC) is an integral part of the Health & Wellbeing Unit within Student Affairs. UREC includes facilities, programs, and services designed to empower members of the UNC Charlotte community, with a particular focus on students, to be physically active and develop lifelong health and wellbeing behaviors. The department includes two indoor recreation centers, two field complexes, an outdoor fitness park, sport programs, and fitness programs. UREC seeks to provide a framework for educational, leadership, and development opportunities for students through participation. UREC also provides an exceptional employment experience to more than 250 students that fosters the development of essential career readiness skills.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Assistant Director of Student Development and Engagement is an essential member of the UREC team, providing leadership to student employee development initiatives and general student outreach strategies, along with direct supervision of the Coordinator of Outreach and Engagement.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The Assistant Director of Student Development and Engagement provides leadership to student development initiatives for the more than 250 University Recreation student employees. The Assistant Director also provides leadership to student outreach efforts and UREC brand management, with direct supervision of the Coordinator of Outreach and Engagement. This role manages department wide student development initiatives, including processes and procedures, awards and recognition, trainings, and other professional development opportunities for UREC student employees. The Assistant Director manages daily operations and supports all professional staff and student employees within outreach and engagement.

Student Development (60%)

  • Manage developmental programs and initiatives for the more than 250 student employees across UREC
  • Chair the UREC Student Training and Development Committee and serve on the UREC Awards and Recognition Committee as a non-voting member
  • Develop and manage student employee learning outcomes and implementation/assessment of outcomes throughout the department
  • Manage and regularly update the student employee manual, including processes and procedures related to hiring, onboarding, accountability, recognition, and other systems standardized at the department level
  • Lead the planning and implementation of the UREC Emerging Leaders Retreat
  • Assist the Director of University Recreation in the planning and implementation of leadership development for program assistants (student leaders)
  • Work with colleagues to infuse student learning and development into UREC programs and services
  • Maintain accurate usage data and regularly assess student development initiatives to ensure effectiveness, efficiency, and compliance with university, state, and national standards and best practices
  • Assist in the development, oversight, and analysis of budgets, including expenditures, fees, and other revenue


Outreach and Engagement Supervision (20%)

  • Develop and manage strategies to support the UREC brand to all stakeholders, with particular attention to students
  • Represent UREC on the Health and Wellbeing Outreach Team
  • Supervise the Coordinator of Outreach and Engagement
  • Meet one-on-one weekly with the coordinator
  • Provide support, guidance, and indirect supervision of student employees supervised by the coordinators

Department Leadership and Administration (10%)

  • Actively participate as a member of the UREC professional staff team, including professional staff team meetings
  • Ensure that the UREC mission is achieved and values are upheld
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of department strategic plans and annual goals/priorities
  • Advocate for UREC and foster campus and community partnerships to advance physical activity and holistic wellbeing

General Administration (10%)

  • Attend and actively participate in all mandatory Health & Wellbeing Unit, Student Affairs, and UNC Charlotte meetings and trainings
  • Serve on Health & Wellbeing Unit, Student Affairs, and UNC Charlotte committees and working groups as assigned
  • Represent UREC on the Health & Wellbeing Outreach and Engagement Committee
  • Actively participate in NIRSA and/or other relevant professional associations
  • Other duties as assigned by the Associate Director of Programs

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in higher education, recreation, sport management, kinesiology, or a related field
  • Minimum two years of professional experience in recreation, sport management, and/or higher education
  • Demonstrated experience in leading student employee development initiatives
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering a culture of belonging and wellbeing


Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Master's degree in higher education
  • 3 or more years of experience working in collegiate recreation and/or student development
  • A deep understanding of student development theory and experience applying it in a collegiate recreation setting
  • Strong communication and organizational skills


Necessary Certifications/Licenses
* American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and AED certification
Preferred Certifications/Licenses
* American Red Cross CPR, First Aid, and AED instructor certification
