Job Description
A packaging operator is responsible for overseeing the packaging process in a manufacturing or production environment. Their primary duties include operating and maintaining packaging machinery, ensuring products are packaged according to company standards, and maintaining a clean and safe work area. Below is a typical job description for a packaging operator:
Job Purpose:
The Packaging Operator is responsible for operation of packaging equipment including case packers, cartoners, strippers, baggers, palletizers, and warehouse. The person in this position will rotate to all machines.
Key Accountabilites:
* Performs metal detector checks as required and documents checks on the Company provided forms.
* Ensure we are using the correct code date on cartons and cases including checking format coding on the Videojet printer.
* Check that all area totes are in place and used correctly.
* Perform size changes on all packaging machines.
* Clean up and break down of cartons or cases.
* Transport cartons and cardboard to the compactor for recycling. Responsible for loading and unloading compactor.
* Monitor video codes associated with the bagger and case packers to ensure cases are being marked with correct product name, format number, clock time, UPC number , plant identification number and product code.
* Complete quality checks on glue seals and line, product dates, metal detector to ensure quality assurance in represented.
* Continuously monitor the bagging machine to ensure proper seals and to identify potential mechanical problems. Monitor the quality of the bagged product and remove any damaged goods.
* Check the product in the shaker on an hourly basis to ensure quality standards are secure.
* Effectively communicate with forklift driver to replenish necessary supplies.
* Communicate with Quality Assurance technician or supervisor regarding any questionable product.
* Communicate with Maintenance technicians and other packaging operators as needed to resolve line problems. Perform essential functions of the case packer, cartoner and packaging operators during maintenance presence.
* Verbally communicate with the previous operator regarding prior shift's activities (problems that occurred, etc.).
* Responsible for startup, including checking silos, shakers, and metal detectors. Ensure the code date is correct, glue pot has correct temperature and is full. Take carton tare weights. Complete your PRP 700 form daily during your shift.
* At the end of your shift, perform your tailing bucket check and document on the designated company form.
* Follows ISO22000 policies and procedures, address / communicate quality and food safety issues as they occur.
* This position will follow and promote all Quality and FS procedures to ensure compliance with FSSC22000, regulatory, quality, customer, and company requirements.
* Maintain cleanliness inside and outside of equipment and work area.
* Partner with maintenance to fix mechanical problems on machines.
* Drive forklift (as needed) in a safe and efficient manner. Ensure employees on machines have efficient supply of cartons and cases to perform their job function.
* Work and communicate well with others and effectively contribute to the working relationships within Barilla America.
* Take samples for quality assurance 2 times per shift to check for proper color, spots, and cracks in the pasta, and then document on company designated form.
* Responsibility for the regrind and waste process.
* Other duties as assigned.
Desired Skills and Background:
* Knowledge of manufacturing processes and good manufacturing practices (GMP's) preferred.
* Knowledge of food safety, HACCP and appropriate supporting programs (e.g. cleaning, sanitation, pest management, etc.) is a plus.
* Previous work experience in production or food manufacturing and a general working knowledge of computers is preferred, but not required.
