About the role

Symetra's Individual Life Division has an opening for a Senior Underwriting Manager. This role will lead a team of underwriters advancing Symetra's award winning Swift Digital application process. Ideal candidates will have a passion for customer service, employee growth, and continually looking for better solutions.

What you'll do in this role




  • As Sr Life Underwriting Manager, you inspire and coach your team to provide excellent service for our customers and distribution partners.


  • You lead by example and quickly seek accurate and speedy resolution to anything that comes your way.

  • The Sr Life Underwriting Manager provides direction, guidance and oversight of services for department staff engaged in appraising and underwriting applications for life insurance, assessing mortality and morbidity within company guidelines.


  • Builds expertise of technically competent underwriters. Responsible for results of team in meeting company's financial objectives as well as ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory and legal requirements. May underwrite the larger, more complex life insurance applications.


  • Identifies opportunities for profitable growth in order to achieve a balanced, sound and quality book while protecting company's assets.


  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with service and industry partners. May lead more than one team or different projects.


  • Serves as day-to-day operations lead.


  • Provides extensive input as to innovation and ways to improve the customer experience. Mentors less experienced management staff.

Compensation

Salary Range: $113,700- $189,400 plus eligibility for annual bonus program

Who you are



  • At least 12 years of relevant work experience required including 5 years Underwriting Management experience.


  • Proven analytical and problem-solving skills.


  • Strong attention to detail and ability to handle large case loads and provide quick turnaround times while maintaining Symetra's mortality standards.


  • Strong technical and financial underwriting skills. Service oriented with commitment to meet deadlines, prioritize and handle multiple tasks in a demanding work environment.


  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) Advance working knowledge of our reinsurance manuals. Mastery of underwriting principals, practices, insurance medicine, financial underwriting, field operations, product offerings and life insurance contract law.


  • Ability to travel and make presentations to clients and producers. Strong negotiation skills.


  • Bachelor's degree preferred. CLU, FALU and/or FLMI, or working towards completion of designation is preferred.
  • High school diploma requiredCollege degree or equivalent experience preferred



Travel:

Required Training & Professional Development

All newly hired people leaders with direct reports are required to complete a comprehensive leadership development program within their first year. This program includes both virtual and in-person training. The in-person sessions will take place at Symetra's corporate headquarters in Bellevue, Washington. Symetra covers all travel and accommodation expenses.
