About the Department:

The George Mason University Freedom Aquatic & Fitness Center opened in September 1999 and is one of the largest facilities of its type in Northern Virginia. Located on the Science and Technology campus in Prince William county, the 110,000 square foot facility features a 50-meter competition pool, leisure pool, whirlpool, locker facilities and family locker rooms, gymnasium with two practice courts, cardiovascular and strength training equipment, group fitness, mind/body and spin studios, three racquetball/activity courts, community room and classroom, and outdoor field and sand volleyball court.

About the Position:

The George Mason University Freedom Aquatic & Fitness Center, located on the Science and Technology (formerly Prince William) campus, is seeking part-time Water Safety Instructors. Responsibilities:

Teach Swimming Lessons:



  • Instruct students of varying ages and skill levels in basic to advanced swimming techniques.
  • Follow the American Red Cross Swim program curriculum and guidelines.
  • Adapt lessons to meet the needs and abilities of each participant.


Ensure Safety:



  • Monitor swimmers at all times to ensure their safety in and around the water.
  • Enforce pool rules and regulations, maintaining a safe environment for all participants.
  • Respond promptly to emergencies or accidents, following proper protocols.


Provide Feedback and Encouragement:



  • Give constructive feedback to students on their progress.
  • Motivate and encourage students to improve their swimming skills.


Communication:



  • Maintain positive communication with participants and their families, addressing any concerns or questions.
  • Record attendance and track student progress.
  • Collaborate with other staff members to coordinate schedules and activities.


Administrative Duties:



  • Complete lesson plans, progress reports, and any required documentation.
  • Attend required training, staff meetings, and professional development activities.


Required Qualifications:




  • Certification: Current Red Cross Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification required.

  • Experience: Previous experience in swim instruction or working with children and adults in a pool environment preferred.

  • Skills: Strong communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work with diverse age groups, and knowledge of swimming and water safety principles.

  • Physical Fitness: Must be physically fit to demonstrate swimming techniques and assist swimmers as needed.
