AESC's Tennessee gigafactory in Smyrna, which has been operational since 2012, produces batteries for Nissan. The Kentucky gigafactory in Bowling Green will supply Mercedes-Benz with high-performance battery cell modules. The South Carolina gigafactory in Florence will supply technology-leading battery cells for new electric models produced in BMW Group's Spartanburg plant. About the Role

The Senior EHS Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive environmental, health, and safety programs to ensure regulatory compliance, risk mitigation, and a strong safety culture. This role will lead EHS strategy across multiple sites, drive continuous improvement initiatives, and collaborate with leadership to integrate safety into business operations. Certified Safety Professional (CSP) certification is required. Experience in battery manufacturing or related high-tech industries is strongly preferred.

What You Will Do
  • Strategic EHS Leadership:
  1. Develop and implement EHS strategies, policies, and programs to align with business goals and regulatory requirements.
  2. Provide expert guidance on OSHA, EPA, NFPA, and other federal, state, and local regulations.
  3. Drive a proactive safety culture, ensuring leadership engagement and employee participation.
  4. Monitor EHS performance metrics, analyze trends, and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Compliance & Risk Management:
  1. Ensure compliance with OSHA 1910/1926, EPA, NFPA, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and other relevant standards.
  2. Lead regulatory audits, inspections, and incident investigations, ensuring corrective actions are effectively implemented.
  3. Develop and oversee programs for hazard identification, risk assessments, and process safety management (PSM).
  4. Maintain compliance documentation and reporting for regulatory agencies and corporate leadership.
  • Safety & Health Programs:
  1. Oversee programs for behavior-based safety, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, and contractor safety management.
  2. Manage incident investigation processes, including root cause analysis and corrective action tracking.
  3. Develop and maintain emergency response and business continuity plans.
  4. Lead the site's CSP-certified safety program, ensuring best practices in hazard prevention and risk reduction.
  • Battery & Manufacturing Industry EHS Leadership (Preferred):
  1. Assess and mitigate unique risks associated with lithium-ion battery manufacturing, including fire hazards, chemical exposure, and thermal runaway events.
  2. Develop safety programs specific to battery storage, electrolyte handling, and hazardous material disposal.
  3. Ensure ventilation, air quality monitoring, and PPE selection are optimized for battery production environments.
  4. Work closely with R&D and engineering teams to ensure EHS considerations are integrated into new product and process development.
  5. Lead training and emergency preparedness for battery-related hazards, including fire suppression systems and thermal event response.
  • Environmental & Sustainability Initiatives:
  1. Oversee compliance with air, water, and waste regulations, ensuring responsible environmental management.
  2. Drive sustainability initiatives to reduce environmental impact and improve energy efficiency.
  3. Manage hazardous materials and chemical safety programs, including SDS documentation and waste disposal compliance.
  • Training & Employee Engagement:
  1. Develop and deliver EHS training programs, including hazard communication, LOTO, confined space, respiratory protection, and electrical safety (NFPA 70E).
  2. Coach and mentor site leadership, frontline supervisors, and employees on EHS best practices.
  3. Lead EHS committees and engagement initiatives to foster employee involvement in workplace safety.
  • Incident Prevention & Continuous Improvement:
  1. Utilize leading and lagging indicators to drive improvements in EHS performance.
  2. Implement Lean and Six Sigma methodologies for safety and environmental process improvements.
  3. Conduct periodic site risk assessments and implement corrective actions to mitigate hazards.
What You Need
  • Education & Certification:
    1. Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, or a related field (Master's preferred).
    2. Certified Safety Professional (CSP) required.
  • Experience:
    1. 10+ years of EHS experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Skills & Competencies:
    1. Deep knowledge of EHS regulations, risk assessment methodologies, and safety management systems.
    2. Strong leadership, coaching, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
    3. Proven ability to lead regulatory audits, incident investigations, and emergency response programs.
    4. Experience with EHS management software, data analysis, and reporting tools.
    5. Ability to drive culture change, employee engagement, and executive buy-in for EHS initiatives.
  • Understands and follows all standards of IATF16949 and VDA 6.3 quality standards. (training and awareness will be provided for those who are not familiar with these standards)
  • Understands and follows all standards of ISO14001 environmental standards. (training and awareness will be provided for those who are not familiar with these standards)
What is "Nice to Have"?
  • Additional certifications such as CIH, CHMM, or ISO Lead Auditor are a plus.
  • Experience in lithium-ion battery manufacturing or high-tech production environments is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in multi-site EHS management preferred.

Work Environment

The work environment is primarily an automated manufacturing plant with a concrete floor and is characterized by some temperature extremes, moderate noise, and forklift traffic.
