Description

The Staff Scientist will provide advanced independent and/or directed research to achieve the objectives for Dr. Bartke's awarded grants and other research projects, and to continue to advance the overall research objectives. The primary purpose of the staff scientist is to assist in laboratory management, increase publication record, mentoring of graduate students and other lab personnel, and promote/support the team environment and scientific advancement of the Bartke lab and the Division of Geriatrics Research. The Bartke lab studies biology of aging and aging-related disease in in mice and cells.


Examples of Duties

I. Administration 5%
* Responsible for understanding school and hospital policies and the IRB rules and regulations governing human subjects research and for IACUC policies governing animal research.
* Maintain laboratory regulatory compliance, such as animal and hazardous chemical regulations and protocols.
* Lab ordering

II. Teaching 10%
Supervise, assist, and train other lab members and collaborators

III. Research 80%
Design and develop project(s) Perform technical experiments
* Immunostaining
* Real time qPCR
* Western blot
* ELISA
* Cell and tissue culture
* rodent treatments (injections and oral)
* tissue dissection
* Behavioral testing such as Morris water maze and novel object recognition
Assist in managing/mentoring laboratory personnel
Perform data analysis Write manuscripts
Write protocols
Contribute to grants through conceptual ideas, writing, and submission
Present data at lab meetings and national or international scientific meetings
Attend/participate in lab meetings Attend/participate in small or individual meetings

IV. Service 5%
Participates on relevant committees such as IRB, IACUC, conference planning committees, etc.


Qualifications

PhD in, biochemistry, physiology, or a related research field; minimum of 3 years of postdoctoral training or relevant experience. Sensitive to the needs of underrepresented minority populations
