Battalion Chief of Logistics

Pay: $80,000 (starting pay)

Position Summary:

The Battalion Chief of Logistics provides operational oversight for day-to-day logistical functions for the Company, including those items pertaining to fleet, facilities and supply. The position manages Logistics personnel and their performance while providing service to our internal customers. They may provide supervision to other company personnel at times.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Plans and quality controls the daily operations of Logistics, including the monitoring of work standards to ensure personnel are productively utilized and acceptable work quality and service level standards are maintained.

  • Conducts inspections, reviews reports, and investigates complaints to ensure compliance with Company policies, rules, and procedures.

  • Maintains clear, timely, and accurate communications between Management, administration staff and crew members so that support activities are coordinated and achieve company objectives.

  • Provides technical assistance to staff in the completion of their work, and personally handles or directs complex tasks or multi-crew projects.

  • Maintains a competent and motivated work force through work assignments, performance evaluation, counseling, training, and managing member performance improvement actions.

  • Keeps superior officers informed of problems or issues which need to be addressed and proposes alternative solutions for consideration.

  • Identifies ways to improve and streamline logistical operations, including equipment maintenance and repair programs, considering the cost and benefit of possible improvements.

  • Assists the Logistics Division Chief in preparing the annual budget, anticipating the resources required for the Company to provide for the needs of its divisions.

  • Identifies and assesses the nature of problems impacting the effectiveness of service delivery, such as the status and condition of equipment, methods and practices, utilization of staff, and takes corrective action in consultation with the Logistics Division Chief.

  • Communicates Company objectives to all personnel under their supervision. Monitors the implementation of these objectives for their work programs and takes corrective action, as necessary.

  • Plans, directs, supervises, and coordinates the work of assigned personnel;

  • Projects a positive image to individuals and groups as a professional, competent, and helpful manager. Communicates effectively and openly with different individuals and groups.

  • Prepares timely and accurate reports and maintains files in an up-to-date status. Generates a periodic performance report for the Logistics Division Chief regarding the work activities within their areas of responsibility, as required.

  • Assures that all personnel under their supervision are adequately trained and appropriately informed regarding their duties and responsibilities.

  • Work as a team member within the division.

  • Maintains an adequate level of physical fitness to meet job requirements. Keeps abreast of new tactics, procedures, programs, and technologies in their respective areas of responsibility.

  • Projects a positive, professional image to the public. Develops and maintains support for the Company.

  • Abides by the Company's rules, regulations, policies, procedures, mission, guiding principles, and the Capstone Way.

  • Maintain knowledge, skills, and proficiency by attending Training drills and completing Training assignments as directed by the company.

  • Performs additional tasks or duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Valid Driver's License with a clean driving record.

  • High School Diploma or GED.

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university, OR ten (10) years of paid professional all risk fire experience or equivalent, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Five years as a company officer/supervisor with supervision responsibilities.

  • Proven knowledge of "best practices" information sources and organizations available to fire service leaders.

  • IS-100, 200, 700, and 800.

  • A functional, working knowledge of computers and software, to include Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, Teams, etc. Must be able to create documents with basic functionality.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Advanced working knowledge with computers, iPads, cellular phone applications and other IT equipment and software.

  • Advanced fire service or management training.

  • Logistical support experience of a fleet, facilities and/or supply network.

  • Basic familiarity with fire service personal protective equipment, uniforms, and fire service equipment.

  • Basic familiarity with automotive mechanics (diagnostics, parts, systems, significance).

  • Basic familiarity with facility systems (HVAC, electrical, etc).

  • Familiarity with PS Trax or other asset management software.

  • Proven knowledge of local, state, and federal rules and regulations as applied to the fire and emergency service industry (NFPA, DOT, CVC, etc).

  • IS-300 and 400.

  • California State Fire Marshal Fire Officer or equivalent.

Core Competencies:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies to perform the essential functions of this position:

  • Evaluating, planning, and managing the technical as well as the management aspects of logistics, to include fleet, facilities and supply. This includes research, presentation of information, procurement, tracking, and issuing. Be familiar with the routine repair and maintenance of vehicles and tools, including gasoline powered equipment.

  • Performance evaluation and employee development.

  • Program planning and development; written and oral communication.

  • Objective setting and organizational performance evaluation.

  • Functioning as part of a management team; planning, organizing, and coordinating the work of staff.

  • Problem identification and resolution. Analyzing complex problems, developing effective and responsive solutions, and preparing accurate reports and recommendations regarding these solutions.

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

  • Ability to track and record project elements (expenditures, for instance) and provide update reports when necessary.

  • Interpreting and making decisions in accordance with laws, policies, and protocols.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • This position may manage support staff and is responsible for the performance management and hiring of the employees within that area.

Physical Demands:

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell.

  • The employee must occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

  • This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but is determined by the Logistics Division Chief. This position may include periodic remote work. This position may periodically require longer hours, and some weekends, based upon extenuating circumstances.

Travel:

  • Travel is primarily local during the business day, although out-of-area and overnight travel may be periodically required.

Work Environment:

  • This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
