Description of Duties: The School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences (SoMAS) at Stony Brook University invites applications for a non-tenure-track position in Marine Sciences, Atmospheric Sciences, or Sustainability Studies as part of the SUNY Promoting Recruitment, Opportunity, Diversity, Inclusion and Growth plus (PRODiG ) program. The PRODiG program was created as a pipeline to facilitate postdoctoral fellows to enter tenure-track faculty positions at SUNY campuses. The incumbent will be initially hired into a two (2) year, 12-month non-tenure track faculty position at the lecturer level beginning in the fall of 2025, and will be mentored by a tenured faculty member most closely related to their research interests. A successful and productive candidate will have the opportunity to transition to a tenure-track position after two years.

Candidates must have demonstrated plans to contribute to inclusion, diversity and equity, excellence in innovative research, and will teach classes (estimated 1 per year) at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels, as well as mentor students. Their primary focus will be pursuing scholarly productivity.

To participate in PRODiG, candidates are required to:

  • Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
  • Have a Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Atmospheric Sciences, Marine Sciences, Sustainability Studies or related field in hand no later than August 2025.
  • Demonstrate personal, academic, and/or work experience engaging with diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or a commitment to facilitating and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the campus community.


Such experience may include, but is not limited to, an academic/scholarly research track record that includes focus on diversity, equity, and inclusion; work, volunteer/unpaid/community service; or related experience/expertise in serving underserved or vulnerable areas and/or populations.

Preferred Qualifications:
Expertise in coastal marine and/or atmospheric processes and/or sustainability. Demonstrated research experience and/or publication productivity in area of expertise.

Preference will be given to candidates who are:



  • Current SUNY students, alumni, and/or Fellows
  • From a low-income background (e.g., Pell-eligible as undergraduates).
  • Were first generation college students (students whose parents have not earned a bachelor's degree).
  • Have overcome adversity.
  • Are AmeriCorps alumni.
  • Are veterans.

Complete applications should include a curriculum vitae, statements of teaching and research interests (including a list of publications and previous courses taught), contact information of at least three (3) references, and an applicant essay (750 words or less), responding to the following:
