Pay

$168,780 - $214,032 Annually for the SES.3 level

$202,500 - $256,824 Annually for the SES.4 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.


Job Description

We have an opening for a Geophysical Software Developer and Data Specialist to develop and apply advanced computational methods to seismology research related to nuclear non-proliferation, national security, and energy security research. We are seeking an individual with the quantitative skills and experience to work with a team of geophysicists, seismologists and developers in applying these methods to a variety of multi-disciplinary monitoring problems in the Geophysical Monitoring Program (GMP) and support the management of GMP's extensive data assets. You will report to the Seismology Group Leader and the GMP Program Leaders. This position is in the Seismology Group within the Atmospheric, Earth, and Energy Division (AEED).

You will

  • Work with a team to maintain and improve the LLNL Geophysical Monitoring Database (GMDB) in support of a variety of research programs related to nuclear non-proliferation, national, and energy security.
  • Develop scientific software capable of ingesting, organizing, assessing quality, compiling, controlling access and tracking provenance from large geophysical data sets from many different sources used for seismological research.
  • Develop software to manipulate, analyze, measure, visualize and output large geophysical datasets used in geophysical research. This includes applying algorithms for data intensive computing to the organized large geophysical datasets.
  • Work with GMP IT and LLNL IT staff on data infrastructure, including storage and processing for large geophysical datsets and related software.
  • Work as part of an interdisciplinary scientific team of geophysicists, seismologists and developers to accomplish research goals, design and implement research projects, and coordinate program requirements and deliverables for sponsors and customers.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

At SES.4 Level

  • Lead independent research and development projects in computational seismology and/or application of data science methods to geophysical problems.
  • Lead research proposals and program execution from the Seismology Group and team members.
  • Interact with program sponsors and external stakeholders to advance LLNL missions.

Qualifications
  • M.S. in Geophysics with focus on computing and/or data science OR M.S. in Computer Science or Data Science with focus on scientific applications OR equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Advanced understanding of the principles of relational databases and significant experience in database modeling and development.
  • Significant experience collecting, processing, and organizing large geophysical datasets (e.g. seismic, acoustic) and database of geophysical waveforms and accompanying metadata.
  • Collaborative programming skills (Java, Python, SQL), and experience with heterogeneous computing and development environments (Mac/PC/UNIX/LINUX platforms).
  • Significant experience applying computational methods such as high-performance computing, ML techniques, and/or data intensive computing, to multi-disciplinary scientific problems.
  • Advanced knowledge of cloud-based computing and storage.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information as needed.

Qualifications at the SES.4 level:

  • Advanced subject matter expertise in geophysical methods, as evidenced by a substantial track record of peer-reviewed publications.
  • Significant experience with project management, including proposal writing, budgeting, staffing, and resource allocation.
  • Significant experience with seismic monitoring applications, operations, forward and inverse modeling of subsurface problems, wave propagation modeling, and numerical methods including finite difference, finite volume, and/or finite element techniques.
