CLINICAL LABORATORY SERVICES

Job Summary

Provide services to both inpatient and outpatient clients as assigned. Collects specimens according to protocol, prepares specimens for the laboratory, maintains accurate records of drawn specimens using established procedures for UCSF. May be assigned to perform phlebotomy at either location (SFH / SMH) Responsible for labeling and distributing appropriate containers to collect other specimens, giving instructions for complex tests, clerical duties, specimen processing duties, computer entry, and specimen preparation for transport to referral labs. Will be assigned to Clinical Laboratory Processing section as needed.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS

  1. Reports to: This position reports directly to the Laboratory Support Manager and indirectly to the on-site Laboratory Technical Supervisor. May also have indirect reporting to a Support Supervisor (if applicable)

  1. Supervises: There are no supervisory activities in this position.

In accordance with California Business and Professions Code Section 1269 unlicensed persons in the UCSF Clinical Laboratories shall adhere to the following:

Unlicensed personnel in the UCSF Clinical laboratories may perform the following functions

  1. Biological specimen collection (except phlebotomy unless certified to do so), including patient preparation, labeling, handling, preservation or fixation, processing or preparation, and transportation and storage of specimens.

  1. Assisting a licensed physician and surgeon CLS in a licensed clinical laboratory.

  1. Assisting in preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting.

  1. Preparation and storage of reagents and culture media.

  1. Assisting in the performance of quality control procedures.

  1. In the case of qualitative and semi-quantitative "spot, tablet, or stick" tests, the personnel may add the test reagent to the specimen or vice versa, but may not read or record the results

  1. Unlicensed laboratory personnel may be assigned to do primary inoculations of test material onto appropriate culture media in the microbiology deptartmen, stain slide preparations for microscopic examination, and subculture from liquid media.

Unlicensed UCSF Clinical Laboratory personnel shall NOT do any of the following

  1. Record test results, but he or she may transcribe results that have been previously recorded, either manually by a physician and surgeon or personnel licensed under this chapter, or automatically by a testing instrument.

  1. Perform any test or part thereof that involves the quantitative measurement of the specimen or test reagent, or any mathematical calculation relative to determining the results or the validity of a test procedure.

  1. Perform any phase of clinical laboratory tests or examinations in the specialty of immunohematology beyond initial collection and centrifugation.

  1. Standardizing or calibrating an instrument or assessing its performance by monitoring results of appropriate standards and control.

  1. Reading or recording test results, except that the personnel may transcribe results that have been previously recorded automatically by a testing instrument.

  1. Quantitatively measuring any sample or reagents unless done automatically by the instrument in the course of its normal operation or by the use of previously calibrated and approved automatic syringes or other dispensers.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $37.74 - $47.11 (Hourly Rate).

Required Qualifications


  • Graduation from high school or a General Education Diploma (GED)

  • Two years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical, or social sciences, and one year of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience, and knowledge and abilities essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.

  • Possession of a current phlebotomy certificate issued by California Department of Public Health Laboratory Field Services

  • Experience in performing Phlebotomy on a broad range of patient types

  • Demonstrates computer skills, demonstrated human relation and effective communication skills

  • Must be able to work well under pressure.

  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations and at off-site locations as assigned and in varying schedules as needed.

  • Proficient with PC, Windows, Word, Excel, etc.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Previous knowledge of and experience in a clinical lab setting, and medical terminology preferred.

  • Previous Phlebotomy experience in an In-Patient hospital setting

License/Certification

Current California State Phlebotomy Certificate
