PURPOSE:

The Laboratory Technician performs tests utilizing requisite lab equipment and instruments. The position records observations, measures, reports results and is responsible for laboratory maintenance, preparing solutions and media, ordering supplies and for cleaning and maintaining facilities and equipment. The laboratory technician must be familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures, including knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices and procedures within the field and the company. The position relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job and works under immediate supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor/Manager. This position will also provide technical support to Calumet and its customers in the areas of research, new product development and applications activities. The position may include specific duties such as sample preparation for key customers, stability studies on new products, cost reduction projects and improved processing studies. This Laboratory Technician will have increased communication with plant site personnel, marketing and other Calumet Management. It also may involve rotation to projects that are under the direction of other Calumet Management.

KEY OBJECTIVES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Maintain knowledge of all required testing procedures and permit requirements
* Verify that all products tested meet the needs of its intended customer
* Timely and accurate completion of all testing while adhering to all safety rules and regulations.
* Manage boiler/cooling tower chemistry and equipment and manage data entry for environmental permits.
* Ensure data integrity and maintain all testing data, papers, certificates of analysis and orders.
* Provide technical support for sales, operations, product support and other groups.
* Evaluate raw materials for process treating parameters.
* Develop and evaluate improvements for test procedures.
* Coordinate evaluation and introduction of new test equipment.
* Complete specialized testing.
* Utilize troubleshooting skills in the operation and adjustment of laboratory testing equipment through verification of equipment compliance to required parameters with known specifications and standards and to perform maintenance on assigned equipment.
* Employ problem solving skills in determining the correct solution to challenges the laboratory or company may face, overcome obstacles and make good decisions.
* Correctly use various testing techniques to complete tasks as assigned.
* Analyze statistical and test data in order to come to a logical solution on existing testing or process problems.
* Complete inventory and batch calculations accurately for laboratory and plant products.
* Accurately document laboratory testing results, personnel training, instrument testing certifications, the validation of laboratory tests and instruments and both internal and regulatory body permitting.
* Effectively communicate test data in a clear and understood manner to both internal and external departments.
* Promote team building in assisting other technicians and working on departmental projects.
* Collaborate with both internal and external groups in joint efforts for continual improvement, quality control and problem solving.
* Summarize information pertaining to testing challenges and results in order to make presentations to plant management.
* Ensure and enforce cleanliness in the lab. Participate in housekeeping and safety audits within the 5S program.
* Schedule and conduct monthly laboratory meetings
* Assist with receipt and inspection of raw materials, ordering and stocking
* Ability to work scheduled nights, weekends, holidays and overtime as required

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCES:

* High School Diploma or GED
* 3+ years' experience in industrial lab or similar

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCES:

* Scientific degree
* Experience in utilizing computer applications such as LIMS, SAP as well as experience with laboratory tests and testing equipment such as: HPLC, GC, Density, TOC, Viscometers, KF, flash, pour, distillation, liquid chromatography, UV, IR, colorimetric
